Here is a challenge. I have a copy of Certificate of Marriage 'Schedule E' (19 Victoria No 30).

The marriage took place on 10th September 1889 at St Michaels Church, 'Sydwry' between Thomas Henry Morgon, hairdresser Sydwry and bachelor & Julia Newitt, Puridli Life 'Sydwry', Spinster.

Apologies but I can't make out the writing and there is a word which appears to be 'Sydwry'. It could be Sydwuy or Sydwry, or even Lydwny ..... however I can't find it on the internet.

The clergyman was Edward David Headguide and the marriage took place at the Church of England at St Michael's Church, Sydwry.

The witness's were Wm R Barrister and Lucy L Morgon.

I believe that Thomas Henry Morgon was also husband to Alice Morgon and their daughter was Alice Henrietta Morgon (my grandmother).

My mother seems to think that Thomas Henry Morgon had a barber's shop in Sydney, Australia ...... not sure if this is true but I do have a photo of him standing outside a shop with his name above.

Can anyone throw some light on this?

Many thanks

Catherine

If this is Australia, could the name not be Sydney?

HelsBels007

HelsBels007 Report 13 Jun 2010 20:44

Yes, could be but not convinced. The word does not look like Sydney. If he was in Australia he must have come back as my grand mother was born in 1905 in Ealing. Her christening date was 7/7/1905

Very possibly my grand mother in 1911 - however my mother refers to uncles Harry and Jack Clark. I wonder if there were other brothers to Henry and John. I guess Harry could have been short for Harold?

Just thinking - if Alice Morgon married Thomas Henry Morgon in 1903 and had Alice Henrietta Morgon in 1905, who must she have been married to have sons that included CLARK, John Son Single M 19 1892 Railway Porter London Peckham, and CLARK, Henry Son Single M 17 1894 Grocers Assistant London Peckham. What would have been her maiden name?

Also, were there any children born to Thomas Henry Morgon and Julia Newitt?

It looks like Thomas a Julia married in Australia as you said so if you can find someone who does Australian look ups that may help

Looks like Alice and John Clark only had the two children

And Thomas and Julia did'nt have any children with them in 1901 so either no they didnt have any or they could be away somewhere hard to tell really

Does anyone have any idea as to the parents, brothers and sisters for Thomas Henry Morgon?

jax

jax Report 13 Jun 2010 23:17

I cannot see any census with him on as a child so maybe he went to Australia with his parents before 1871. The only other way to find out who his parents were is to order his birth certificate to be sure

I'ld go with Sydney - there is/was a St Michael's, Sydney abt 7 m NW of downtown - I was a bit thrown by the Victoria on the schedule, since Sydney's in NSW, but then I realized 19 Victoria is a regnal year like you get dating laws, etc.
