Graham Report 19 Jun 2010 20:17

I'm trying to find my fathers mothers age at the time of his birth in 1933 . i have narrowed it down to two possibles but must know the age for proof.
Details:
name James Albert moon
born 25/02/1933 at 4 kings road
Mothers name : rose eleanor moon (single )

I have found a rose eleanor moon born 30/12/1911. Parents were james william moon and elizabeth ann moon ( nee williams ) and lived at 187 guiness buildings bermondsey. I have b.c for this.

I have also found a rose eleanor moon who was born in 1919 and married in 1939 to ernest leslie shepherd in hammersmith. parents name was charles william robert moon,

My actual problem is that no other names apart from rose eleanor moon appear on the bc of james albert moon.
The ages of the ones found are 22 years and 14 years
which one is my gran ?

manythanks
graham

Have you got your dad's marriage cert ? Does it give a father's name? Sometimes they will give their stepfather's name if that's all they have ever known.
The witness names may be relations (brother etc) which would also help narrow it down.

Micheal,
No sorry i don't have these details ,it was a unspoken thing when i was small. I have my fathers bc but this shows no fathers name (ilegitimate)

You obviously know your parents names so why now put them in the free search site and find a certificate reference on :

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

EDIT :
Had a quick look for James A Moon's marriage but it seems Freebmd haven't transcribed the latest records.
You'll be able to find them at your local records office or library on reels of film.

Hmm, it is easy to assume it was the older Rose Eleanor, but might not be. I assume you've found no likely marriage for the younger one?

You could try tracing living relatives of the one who married to see if they know of a child born out of wedlock, but you could be opening a vat of worms. There are people on here who done similar who might be able to offer advice.

Who brought your father up?

Madmeg

Madmeg Report 19 Jun 2010 20:43

Michael, if he isn't sure who his mother was, he isn't likely to have a father on his marriage cert - or if he has, he has made it up.

However, if it were my dad I would spend the money anyway. You never know.

Graham Report 19 Jun 2010 20:58

madmeg,
Thanks for the info. I have found a marriage for the young one, she married ernest leslie shepherd in 1939.
The older one married henry burchett in 1941.

My father came down to somerset from london when a baby and was brought up by an old lady who has long since died . Presumably he was taken in

Is it me who is confused ?
I assume Graham knows who his mother is.
It's his Grandmother he's trying to verify.
I just thought his parents marriage cert may have some clues as to which family Rose Eleanor belonged.
With a bit of luck there may be a witness by the name of Shepherd or Burchett which would point the way to which Rose was his grandmother.

Or have I misunderstood ?

Could you find out who was living at the birth address on electoral roll for that year?

Your not confused at all . My parents marriage certificate holds no clues and i remember my mother saying it had a made up name on it.She is elderly now and it is too late to phone her now to ask as she goes to bed early.
I think i need to find more details of st pancreas hospital where james albert was born. Any advice on this would be appreciated .
Manythanks

I'm not sure the hospital would be able to give any more info if the mother didn't want to give it at the time.

Was James Albert baptised? Sometimes there are clues there.

The hospital records should show her date of birth.

Someone has the 1919 Rose in their tree here at GR. It's a delicate kind of question to ask, but you can always just try asking whether their Rose is the daughter of Charles, married to Ernest, as you think she is in your tree and would they mind telling you their relationship to her.

Hi Graham

It was Michael who thought he was confused, but in fact it turned out to be me. Yes, Michael, I agree the marriage cert might throw something up, and is worth a go, but I was under the impression that Graham's dad didn't know anything about his mother or her family.

Graham has sussed out the marriages of the two ladies, I got them the wrong way round.

I have no idea if you would be entitled to any records they have, but try emailing and see what they say.

You didn't answer my question as to who brought your dad up?

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 19 Jun 2010 21:38

Graham thinks the woman who reared his dad was someone he was placed with, it seems. But it might well be worth investigating a possible connection.

The household of the older REMoon in 1911 at 187 Guiness, for info:

MOON ELIZABETH 1881 30 St Olave (Bermondsey) London
MOON JAMES WILLIAM 1882 29
MOON ELLENA 1905 6
MOON WILLIAM 1910 1

as it can be useful to have other names e.g. to search trees for.

edit - likely further births to that couple:

Births Jun 1914
MOON James W Williams St.Olave 1d 359
Births Mar 1917
Moon Elizabeth Williams St.Olave 1d 303

I think the 1919 Rose's mother's name is recorded/transcribed incorrectly: Tunley, not Tanley.

Marriages Jun 1915
Moon Charles W R Tunley Fulham 1a 733
Tunley Annie F Moon Fulham 1a 733

Other children:

Births Sep 1916
Moon Marjorie A Tunley Hammersmith 1a 380
Births Sep 1920
Moon Edgar R Tunley Hammersmith 1a 478

Both of them married in Hammersmith as did that Rose.

Madmeg

Madmeg Report 19 Jun 2010 22:06

The Burchett family appear to have had two children. Likely marriage for the elder, several possibles for the younger. But maybe we shouldn't be going down that route yet. Graham, I'll pm the details of you need them.

The Shepherd family is less easy. No children immediately following marriage but there was the tiny hiccup of a war at the time. I can't see a likely death of Ernest Leslie on the CWGC, and possible children born 1946 and later.

I wonder why Graham's dad went to Somerset - maybe one of the Rose Eleanors has some connection, so off to look. That said (Jax, take note!) in 1910 my hubby's great grandmother took in a baby born 150 miles away when she was - hang on - 55, and a widow, and the lad never looked back.
