Hmm, well, sort me out -- what's the last electoral roll Ante was on? Assuming he died before the next one, it will give us a reasonable timeframe for the death and thus his birth, anyhow!

edit - as you did - so a grandchild of Ante and Ann died in 1972 at age 62, i.e. born circa 1910.

That doesn't really work.

Mate Marin was a *son* of Ante and Ann and he was born circa 1911, according to our info here.

No JC, no date of death grrr

There is this death that at least puts a date of birth of one of the little Smiths!

-- is there a *year of death*?? ;)

year of death minus age 85 = ?

i.e. that way we have his approx DOB.

Death was in Swan, WA, so the Mate Kosovich on the ER in Swan in 1925 I mentioned earlier is likely ours?

A google also gave me search results in the IGI:

Results for: Kosovich
International Genealogical Index / Continental Europe - 49

Ante KOSOVICH
Christening: 19 JAN 1853 Licki Novi, Hrvatska, Yugoslavia
Father: Stepan KOSOVICH
Mother: Mathia

as a *submitted* record.

A submitted record with an exact date and place, and not claiming to know the mother's surname, tends to look like a transcription from parish records, to me.

The father's name Mathia might be a source for "Mate".

... of course, a Mate Kosovich, with different parents, was christened in the same place 10 days later. I told you: John Smith! ;)

Here's what's interesting, though -- the mother of the 1853 Mate was: Ilka FERKOVICH.

That's just a little reminiscent of the name you have for the mother of the 1911 Mate: Ivka Al firivich. (Didn't the surname start out as one word? It's two?)

There are over 130 submitted records for Ferkovich in Licki Novi and Gospic, Yugoslavia.

Google maps offers a lot of institutions and such in Zagreb for Hrvatska, Croatia.

Lički Novi, Gospić
Croatia

is about 100 miles ssw of Zagreb.

When people had made a major geographic/linguistic shift, they did often name birthplaces that were recognizable to / spellable by the local population where they settled.

Just tried google, as I'm sure you have, and it came up with your thread from March:

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.asp?wci=thread&tk=1210722

Would you delete that, as it is a duplicate (not permitted) and there is a risk that someone will see it at some point and not realize that all the information in this thread has already been found?

Unfortunately, "Mate Kosovich" seems to be the John Smith of Yugoslavia!

The one I was looking at in trees at Ancestry (and I'm not sure whether it's just one or more than one) seems not to be yours.

Here's another who seems not to be:

http://www.findmypast.co.uk/passengerListPersonSearchStart.action

KOSOVICH Mate born1898 departed1927 Liverpool Canada Halifax

travelling with a Peter Kosovich with the same year of birth.

Your Mate presumably travelled to Australia not via the UK, so he won't show in departures from the UK, of course.

I still wonder whether there isn't a good chance the Mate Kosovich-s are related, and it might be worth contacting people with others in their tree. (I was referring to trees at Ancestry, not here at GR.)

http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/

I don't have access to Australian records at Ancestry, but a general search of historical records shows him on electoral rolls in Kalgourlie starting in 1937 (as Mate, later Mate Marin?).

There's another Mate Kosovich (at least) in Queensland around the same time.

But in 1925 and 1936 there is a Mate Kosovich in Swann, Western Australia. (Two entries at Ancestry for 1925 -- just a duplication?) Would this be him? It doesn't likely help a lot if it is, other than placing him there by 1925.

(Put me out of my misery -- is the name pronounced "mate" or "mattay"?)

The surname barely registers in English records -- marriages in 1950 and 1996, no births or deaths.

Susan, even if you don't subscribe for Ancestry worldwide, you can still do the general search for the names and see whether anything comes up, you just won't be able to see details.

There is a family tree on Ancestry that you have access to -- just search for Mate Kosovich. It indicates that he died in NZ. I suppose this is probably your friend's tree, though. ;)
