Hi Christine,

The short answer is no! The story goes that on the death of my Grandmother, Josephina (1929). My father patrick about 9 was deserted and found sleeping on a park bench and a young lad, from a mining family we think are Ridgway took him home and brought him up. His mother died in Barmbrough, Yorkshire. My dad I think lived close to Conisbrough/Mexbrough.
We don't know what happened to my grandfather John. According to his marriage cert. he would have been 53 in 1929, which was not young at the time!

Well! It all seems to have gone a bit quiet. If you are all away helping others, I do understand.

But I must genuinely thank you ALL for your very helpful submissions. I shall endeavour to chase up the many avenues of research; you have opened up for me!

I think that what has shown up through Gael (from down Under) as to where John started (1874 or 1876) Wicklow, Ireland and from Alison in the reference to Cornsay, Durham, England in 1911 are useful avenues of research! Any further developments will be gratefully received from you all!

Eringobragh! Re: Wicklow

Hi Christine, Well it's a bit of a story, but it may prove fruitful. It immediately relates to the last posting by Gael (ffrom Down Under) she found a reference to people in Ashford, Wicklow Ireland? I had an genealogical search, purchased at great expense; which has since disappeared into the ether after a clear up. It proved quite difficult, but the one family it did come up with were the Healeys of Rathnew, Co Wicklow. There was no corroborating evidence, but Gaels assertion that it was an mining area rekindled my interest. I also found that Rathnew is in Ashford!
Looking on family search I found 2 (conflicting) references.

Ist Family
Patrick Healey (father) Catherine Doyle (mother) John b. 02/02/1874 Ashford, Wicklow, Ireland.

2nd Family
Patrick Healey (father) Catherine Healey Doyle (mother) John b. 19/12/1876, Wicklow, Ireland.

I thought they may be the same family with the John born 1874 dying, which I think is extremely unlikely thinking about it. And I could'nt find any reference to a death. I really don't know how to go from here, research skills being in their infancy. But I thought I might raise another thread to see if anything comes up in wicklow itself!

Alison,

I am intrigued by your finding John Healy in Cornsay (census 1911), given the close proximity to where my grandparents were married. It shows him as 38? which means he would have been 44/45 at time of marriage which is shown as 42 on the MC! Not really surprising, as he would have been marrying a young lady of 21. If he was nearer 44/45 it may explain why we have had problems finding his birth! That he was listed as Healy would also not be very surprising, as a boarder he would have been unlikely to have filled in his own details. I think you may have found something.
I have tried sending you my Gparents MC, my fathers BC, and correspondence with the successor church where my Gparents got married through Genesreunited. Have you received them.

Does anyone else want these, please furnish an email.

most grateful for yours efforts

John

Just throwing ideas around. Father could have married again to Bridget after Catherine and wouldn't show up on Census.

However, I've found another six probables in Ireland with parents Patrick and Bridget - see http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=home

Erin & NinjaLady,

I can send you an email of my grandparents marriage cert. & my fathers birth cert. and you can glean the information regarding witnesses etc;. But you will have to give me your email addresses. Also I have contacted the church (on the marriage cert.). The church still exists but has changed from RC to CofE. I also wrote to the RC priest who resides at the successor church but he has not been very helpful!.

What I should like to do is check the census for 1921, which I know I can't do online. To confirm my grandfathers age to see whether there was a mistake on the marriage cert. Excuse my ignorance but is there anywhere I can (public records office) to find that information.

Thanks for your continuing good works. I am most impressed.

NinjaLady....
Have had the same message from himself so I have...and asked for the same info.as you....
Despite what the MC says regarding his age at marriage I wonder why a man of his age wasn't married earlier...Most unusual... women yes but not the men especially a Pitman...mmmm.

Was John Healey a batchelor when he married Josephina? Could you possibly post all the details from the marriage certificate, including names of witnesses, to see if we can get anything more from that source.

Hi Erin

Message from John - he's not sure one way or another about Ireland unfortunately.

I can't see any likely candidates on the 1881, 1891, 1901 or 1911 census for a John Healey born 1876 with the father Patrick.

I'll have another look, just in case I missed something. I'll also have a look at military records to see if something comes up there.

Hi John

Is that your tree on Ancestry? If so, I see you have John Healey born 1876 in Ireland?? Is that birthplace confirmed?

Eringobragh1916

Eringobragh1916 Report 19 Jul 2010 09:31

Morning Gael..As I have said I cannot find a John born abt 1876 to a Patrick in the Durham/Northumberland/Yorks area other than the one we have been tracking which is not the correct one...
Have tried every permutaion of the Surname (Also played around with Christian names)...The next step is a search of the Census 1891/1901/1911 but my ability to search is limited as I dont have access.
Am hoping "John" has some address/Church details from the MC of John and Josephina which may help locate something ....
Am after searching through the "Hooley" Surname at the moment see if that reveals anything...

Hi John,

Have we established that John was born in Durham or could he have been born in Ireland?
