Could this be one of your Bathgates? (Found just putting Simon Bathagte into the search facility of the NAS online catalogue.

Photocopies of the items in the catalogue are available but can be quite expensive. If you are able to visit the NAS, 'phone first to check that the papers will be available as some papers are stored elsewhere and it takes a couple of days for them to get them to the search room for you. You can then read through them at no charge and make notes. You need a readers ticket but this is free and can be issued on the day. See their website for the identification that you need to get a readers ticket.

Hi roodgatherer,

I dont know if this could be him, but if it is why could i not find him on the census for 1851 and 1861???

I will have a further look in to it though as you never know eh!

Thank you for taking time to look this up for me iam very gratful as he is my first and only brick wall, and is very frustrating!!.

I am sure that you will collide with many more brickwalls before you are done! It took me 17 years to verify that I had the correct family for my husband's grandfather - he had a fairly common Scottish name and was illegitimate and he made up a father's name on his first marriage entry! The one thing you do learn from researching is patience.

I wonder if this could be the Simon on the NAS records?

Hi,

iam not sure if the 1st simon is him, as his estimated birth date on the 1841 census was age 40, so he would have been born about 1800.

I will look into the bottom simon ( simons father) as he is estimated to be born about 1807 and may have married Agnes as his second wife ( Maybe????).

Thank you again for taking your time to look into this for me.

Wondering if any of these are related to your Simon?

No Surname Forename Date Description Type Court Reference

EDIT

Tina, remember that ages of adults were rounded down to multiples of 5 years in the 1841 census. So someone whose age was given as 40 could have been born between 1797 and 1801.
