You can see now why it's important that we know all the names....hence me researching Viola Victoria

A useful free site is the LAC gateway:
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/genealogy/index-e.html

Drilling down from there, a search at:
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/passengers-quebec-1865-1900/001082-100.01-e.php
get one of the Cardinal Browning group of kids [think that's the group, but had a bit of bother transcribing image]
- Robt is Toronto bound

Name: HALL, Robert
Age: 14
Date of Arrival (YYYY/MM/DD) : 1886/06/28
Port of Arrival: Quebec, Quebec
Ship: POLYNESIAN
Reference: RG 76
Microfilm: C-4535

A search at:
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/home-children/001015-100.01-e.php
gets

Surname: HALL
Given Name: Robert
Age: 14
Sex: M
Ship: Polynesian
Year of Arrival: 1886
Departure Port: Liverpool
Departure Date: 08 July 1886
Arrival Port: Quebec
Arrival Date: 18 July 1886
Party: Cardinal Manning
Destination: Ottawa
Comments: From London Unions
Source: Library and Archives Canada/Bibliothèque et Archives Canada
Reference: RG76 C 1 a and General Correspondence file RG17, Vol.519, File 57294.
Microfilm: C-4535
Type of Record: Passenger Lists/Listes de passagers
Group of Children Traveling Together

[so I stuffed up with my transcription - there's also a 13 y o Charles arriving July 1887 with another Cardinal Manning group you might like to check out - so this Chas should be 32 if he were on the 1906 census - these interpolated censuses only covered MB, SK, AB]

mgnv Report 27 Jul 2010 05:01

An alternative drilldown gets the census links page at:
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/genealogy/022-911.009-e.html
you can get images of 1851, 1881-1911.
The transcriptions might differ, but anyway, try it out yourself.

As a worked example, lets try Robt in 1901 - we might reasonably guess he's with Annie, but there's no way to use that info on the free AG search.
So we search 1901 for Robert Hall with spouse=Ann* on Ancestry
If you've got the right sub, then you're done - but if, like me, you don't, then you'll miss some details on your hits:

View Record Name Parent or Spouse Names Home in 1901(Sub-District, District, Province) Birth Year Birthplace Relation View Image
View Record Robt Hall Anna city, Algoma, Ontario 1844 location info
View Record Robert Hall Annie L city, Bruce (North/Nord), Ontario 1850 location info
View Record Robert Hall Annie city, Hochelaga, Quebec 1857 location info
View Record Robert Hall Annie city, York (West/Ouest), Ontario 1870 location info

It's clear the Robt we're after is in York West Co, and age=30/31.
Now this is easy to find, but as an illustration, we'll find him an alternative way which is handy when transcribed surnames differ between AG and Ancestry.

Click Ontario, then York West, then surnames begining with H, then guess how it's been transcribed at AG - well here it's Hall and our Annie jumps out before we even get to Robt.

1901 Census of Canada Page Information

Subdistrict: Toronto Junction (Town) H-8 Page 13

5 135 Hall Annie F Wife M Apr 11 1872 28
6 135 Hall Charlotte L F Daughter S Apr 13 1900
7 135 Taylor Margrette F Boarder W May 9 1851 49
8 135 Taylor John E M Boarder S Aug 4 1888 12

Having seen SatNav birth records, we can guess these Taylors aren't just ordinary boarders.
Anyway, we can click the split screen link, but I've never managed to save that image, and it's only Sched 1 (the people) and Sched 2 (the building) is of interest in 1901.

Our LAC links page gives:
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/census-1901/index-e.html

This is a geographic search, but we have all the info above [NB don't specify schedule # on search]
Actually, Ontario, 131, h 8 areall we need initially, then the sched 1 page#=8 (of 17)
We might guess (correctly) that, since page 8 of 17 is less than halfway thru, we want page 2 of 4 for schedule 2.

Re your PM about being confused. You need to draw up a time line for Robert..pencil and paper jobby!

Start with his birth and then put all the info you have in chronological order

It will all start to make sense. Keep to the basic info at first or you'll confuse yourself! You can fill in other stuff later

I've told you the free way to duplicate some of SatNav's results, so now for some of Ginny's:

http://search.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/sn-54E2884/gbsearch/Births,Marriages,Deaths

Michel is just on the BC side of Crowsnest Pass - I had to look it up, although I must have gone thru it - gives some idea of its impressiveness.

Our grandfather is Charles Hall, son of Charles & Viola Hall. He has six siblings including Ivor. They lived in Alberta,Canada and then BC, Canada. Any other info we could help with we would be more than willing. Thank you so much for helping us with the missing link!
