hello dee
i just had a quick try at those 2 free sites you told me about and struggled a bit - i will have to practice on them - i bet they are good when you know what you are doing !!
thanks for the info on that lady but i don't have the time right now to sort myself out - and i hate to admit it that i'm a bit lost on all that copying & pasting
i was hoping to visit bolton myself - if i can't do it when my sister is here i'll have to organise it for when she goes home
thank you again - i really am very grateful for all your help
bye for now

Hi Irene,

There is a lady going to Bolton Library next week and is kindly offering to do look ups there, so if you wanted anything in particular then maybe she could help and save you a few pennies?

Here's her url to the thread;

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.asp?wci=thread&tk=1235867

Now you can copy and paste that into the top search bar and it will take you directly to her thread, or you could just delete the last 4 numbers and replace them with the last 4 numbers on the url I provided.

hello dee
just bringing you up to date i now have john & eliza'a marriage cert her name came back as adkinson her father is william & a 'dresser' i checked up on the family you found for eliza and i can't find another that fits - i'm dizzy with the different spellings : also the 1855 marriage date you gave me was right & you also sent a list of marriages in 1851 for john pollard and when the cert came from 1855 he was a widow : so i've checked for a previous marriage based on your info and i think he was married to betsy darbishire : so far i haven't found any children of that marriage or betsy's death : the details you gave me for martha's marriage looks excellent as well : you have now left me with a lot of homework to check out. on martha's info 2 of the men were listed as " husbandsman " can you tell me what that means ? I won't have much time for the next 6 weeks or so to do any research as my sister arrives from australia in less than a week and she is with me the whole time [which is terrific] but we are hoping to have a holiday away from home and lots of trips[ til the money runs out anyway ] i want to jump back to another search on my redmonds now as they are giving me serious problems - so the first chance i get i will have to ask for help on genes as i am STUCK
back to pollards - a really big thank you for all your help and to you christine
best wishes to you both
bye for now

Hi Irene,

Yes, one message would have been ok as usually people who have helped check back to the threads when they see a new message has been posted.

Thanks very much for being so polite.

Irene Report 8 Aug 2010 15:12

hi christine
do you mean that i could just have put the one message on about the birth cert - and then said thanks to you and christine ? - instead of doing a message to each of you - would that have been ok ?
i was just trying to be polite - but it certainly would be quicker especially if there were 10 of you helping !!!
thanks for the tip
bye - irene

Hi Irene,

It's better to keep all the messages on the thread as then everyone can see them and you only need to add one set of details so easier for you.

Both Dee and myself saw the details of the birth cert.

Hi Irene,

You can order the cert just using one of the names. So you can use just John Pollard.

hello dee
somehow i missed you message about eliza's father - i need to try and find out more - i'm sure her mother is mary but i don't know anything about her dad : i did a little census research after one of your messages - i was looking at surname's adkinson, hodkinson & hodgkinson but i need to sit with the results and see if anything looks likely
thank you again
best wishes - irene

Irene Report 6 Aug 2010 15:24

thanks again for you help

Irene Report 6 Aug 2010 15:16

hello dee
just to let you know how i've gone on - sent for a birth cert for another of john & eliza pollards children - my isabella was hodgkinson . The new one i sent for was for her sister sarah jane and the birth cert has come back hodkinson - so you were right adkinson, hodkinson or hodgkinson could be right - it may even be something else : anyway i'll try again now for the marriage cert of john & eliza - i don't know whether to leave her SURNAME'S off and just ask for eliza based on the marriage information you gave me but i feel more confident now that i will get a result and if william is his dad that will be great - I CAN'T THANK YOU ENOUGH
bye for now

BatMansDaughter Report 3 Aug 2010 16:11

Hi Irene,

I think Sarah Jane's birth certificate may show the mothers maiden name of Hodgkinson.

Have you traced Eliza back to find out her fathers name and occupation? If you have I think I would order the 1855 marriage and ask that they check the fathers details to confirm or rule out that marriage.
