This could be their 1st child.

Births Jun 1858 (>99%)

Pollard Sarah Jane Bolton 8c 321

It does look likely that the John with parents William and Isabella is yours as he called 2 of his children by those names.

I also have to agree that the marriage in 1855 does seem likely.

hello dee
and thanks again for your help - i think i'll see if i can pin another of john & eliza's children down and get a birth cert and see if i get a different mothers surname on that it was what i've tried with my other difficult one - the trouble is the registars haven't found one yet - but i think maybe it's my best route at the moment
bye for now

Hi Irene,

I agree that Adkinson is not Hodgkinson, however it is very close. My own G G Grandmother married in the parish inwhich she was born and her surname was Osbourne.............. however on her marriage certificate her surname was misinterpreted to Horsmann, so it does happen.

John was in the Bolton reg district in 1851 (well if that's him on the census?) so bearing that in mind this is the only other marriage for a John Pollard in that district between the years 1851-1861;

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
Marriages Sep 1851 (>99%)
Birtwistle Samuel Bolton 21 102
Bromiley Mary Ann Bolton 21 102
Darbishire Betsy Bolton 21 102
Haslam Orlando Bolton 21 102
Hilton Esther Bolton 21 102
Lomax Robert Bolton 21 102
Pollard John Bolton 21 102
Webster Ellen Bolton 21 102

NO Eliza on there, so without wanting to sound as if I'm spending your pennies for you I would hazard a very good guess that Eliza's name was mis-pelt or misheard and therefore put incorrectly on the day.

Irene, yes I'm Dee and it's so much easier and quicker to type than my board name... there are a few Dee's that help out on here so i decided that it would be better just to change my board name but stick t my signing name.... hope I haven't confused you.

hello janet
your two penn'orth is very welcome : i seem to have the sticky end of the stick with mothers surnames i have another one on my tree that is driving me nuts - but you are absolutely right - i'll have to spread all my notes out and see what i can come up with : the help i have had the last couple of days on here has been great - i also love the sense of humour

Just putting my two penn'orth in. Not trying to state the obvious but the way words/names are pronounced in Yorkshire versus Lancashire might sound the same to the rest of the world but to these two counties the pronunciation is very distinct to each. Someone being born in Yorkshire would speak differently to the Lancashire enumerator/registrar....its only a thought but Hodgkinson/Adkinson could easily sound the same.-JLe

hello dee
firstly is dee correct ?
the reason i'm struggling with adkinson is because john pollard & eliza [adkinson or hodgkinson] had several children - but their daughter isabella born in 1860 is my direct relative and i have her birth certificate [which i realise may be wrong] but it says hodgkinson for her mothers surname. i also sent for john & eliza's marriage cert based on hodgkinson and they couldn't find one. i've also had more luck on the census records for hodgkinson - finding a family with eliza at about the right age and a mother mary - i'm mainly trying to trace my direct line by following it up with certificates - i don't want to be on the wrong family : i would rather not put anyone on my tree that i'm not sure of - do you think i am doing this wrong ?
bye for now

Irene,

this is possibly John and Eliza's marriage;

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
Marriages Dec 1855 (>99%)
>>>>>>>>>>ADKINSON Eliza Bolton 8c 246
HAYS Catherine Bolton 8c 246
NEWSHAM John Bolton 8c 246
>>>>>>>>>>>POLLARD John Bolton 8c 246

Eliza's name may have been misheard.... not unusual. I would order the marriage cert and see who John put as his father and also see who the witnesses were.
