I don't understand why you are waiting order this marriage certificate:

Marriages Sep 1905

FONE Emma - Bridport 5a 797
GALE Alfred William - Bridport 5a 797

It won't cost any different if you order in bulk, meanwhile we are all sitting here waiting to help you.

It is entirely up to you, of course. But we cannot advise further on your family without that certificate.

Thanks Meg, you are a star, thought i was going daft trying to see where it said adopted. I have not sent off for cert yet because there are a few certs for different people i want to get and would like to send for them all at the same time but still gathering info,
once again, thank you,

Madmeg Report 10 Aug 2010 15:39

There is nothing to say she was adopted. She is with her family in 1881, and with her sister Eleanor in 1901 working as a nurse. The odd thing about the 1901 is that is also says "Asia, other colour" against her.

We advised you to get Emma's marriage certificate 10 days ago - has it not arrived yet?

Hi again, io have just been looking on the 1891 census on Genes's site, i have Emma Fone age 16yrs bn 1875 Hongking, living in Bridport, Dorset, Teacher in a public school.
When the results first came up and i clicked on Emma, the Gene's report said she was adopted but i viewed the actual census i can't see where it says adopted, anyone out there with good eye sight???

Well, IF she lied on census you can bet she lied on the cert! But you might get her father's name which would help enormously.

Hiya Meg, she could be fibbing about her age, i just had a look at a photo of her and Alfred and she looks a lot older than him, more than the 8 year gap there is supposed to be haha,

Moonshine, she SAID she was 37 on the census. We don't know if it was true. Please buy the marriage certificate and come back with the details. I've found a tree on Ancestry which seems to have the one born 1871 in Stoke Abbott (which ties in with the 1911 census), with father John and mother Elizabeth.

The 1881 census does have her born 1874, it's the 1871 that is out.

Hmmm, the plot thickens haha, it could be her Jan but the year would be wrong but i did find an Emma Fone on the 1891 census aged 16, that would make her birth year about 1875 but it says she was born in HongKong as a British subject and was adopted,
thanks,
Caz.

Snap Michael! I'm thinking maybe she lied a bit about her age? See also census above.

I repeat - get the marriage cert!
