Christine,

I slipped up earlier by putting John H Hilley which I have now corrected.

On the record of the 1914 marriage he is shown as John C Hiley

Sorry for the confusion.

I'm a bit confused now Jonesey. Are you saying that John H Hiley was originally John C ?
I have been checking possible deaths and births for John H Hiley.

Jonesey Report 13 Aug 2010 15:53

Linda,

You say that you have a baby book which indicates that John had parents Mary Elizabeth and Frank, Possibly Done. Are any dates shown in the book?

Just trying to think outside the box a bit:

Mary E Mylan married in March Qtr 1914 to John C Hiley and produced a son John born 24/7/1914.

Could John C Hiley then have moved on or perhaps have been killed during WW1.

Could Mary Elizabeth have taken up with Frank Done who raised John Jnr as his son, hence The father Frank mentioned in the baby book.

Could Mary E and Frank Done eventually have got married. If John H Hiley was still alive did he and Mary eventually divorce clearing the way for Mary to marry Frank in 1930.

Depending upon John Jnr's age when Frank Done came upon the scene John Jnr may well have thought Frank to be his father only later to find out or be told he was not.

All possibilities I think.

So her maiden name wasn't Lowery obviously - got me very confused that.

It looks as though his second wife Evelyn had been married before too. Their marriage is listed under Evelyn Lockwood and Ramsbottom.

I've just seen your last post Brummie Jan. Do you think that could be Annie remarrying after the divorce?

Yes, looks like it - it's registered twice under Hiley and Walley -

Name: Annie Hiley
Spouse Surname: Lowery
Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1948
Registration district: Wakefield
Registration county (inferred): Yorkshire - West Riding

Are you sure that your mother Angela didn't have 2 brothers Linda?
Your mother appears to have been born in Hemsworth, where Annie and John married, but there are two male Hiley births with mmn as Whalley later, both born in Wakefield. I can't put their names up here as they could easily still be alive.

This is the marriage that should give you John's fathers name and occupation -

Name: Annie Walley
Spouse Surname: Hiley (John)
Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1939
Registration district: Hemsworth
Registration county (inferred): Yorkshire - West Riding
Volume Number: 9c
Page Number: 678

Spouse Surname: Hiley Or Walley
Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1948
Registration district: Wakefield
Registration county (inferred): Yorkshire - West Riding

brummiejan Report 13 Aug 2010 15:14

You are correct, according to the death entry he was born 1914, but not sure we can go any further with this given what info you have.
The details of who he married do not help unless as I say you get one of the marriage certs.
