Hi Helen
That record for her birth at 105 Brick lane (now Central Street) and one in 1857 for her baptism at the nearby St Lukes are the only records I can find for her until the 1881 Census.
Cheers, Keith

Sorry Ethel
Yes youv'e got the right one, she used Kate, Emily and Emma at different times. I wrote off the top of my head and should have checked.
Thanks, Keith

Hi Kerith. Just been trying to help with this, but confused as you say 1881 she is calling herself Kate.
I have looked on the 1881 and she appears to be shown as EMILY. aged 24. born St Lukes. with John aged 2 born St Lukes and Geolrge. 11 months. born Marylebone, and living edgware rd.

Is this the correct ones. Ethel.

I’m trying to locate my great grandfather. He was John Sewell and a civil engineer in London. Family lore has it that he attended Charterhouse School and Cambridge University but I have no way of knowing if this is accurate.

The reason for my uncertainty is that my great grandmother (Emma Alfreda Staples b. 1856 St Lukes London) and Mr Sewell never married.

They had 4 children Victor Albert Staples (1876), John Sewell Staples (1878), George Sewell Staples (1880) and Louise Alfreda Sewell Staples (1882).

The original entry in the baptism register of the St Marylebone Parish Church for Victor Albert (Page 50, 3 Oct 1876) has been crossed out. That record had him as Victor Albert son of John and Emma Sewell and the father’s occupation as Civil Engineer. The subsequent entry on the next page (page 51) has him as Victor Albert son of Emma Alfreda Staples, the place for the father’s occupation is left blank.

For the following 3 children the name Sewell is included on their birth certificates as a given name and all spaces for the father’s details are left blank.

I can’t locate Emma in the 1861 and 1871 Census, but for the 1881 census she is living in Edgware Rd Paddington, London and calling herself Emily Staples but John Sewell is not recorded as being present, so I assume that he either had another family or he was unable to marry and live with her for social reasons. Emma has a servant at this time so she is quite well off.

For the 1891 Census she is at 91 Judd Street St Pancras and declares herself a widow. It is possible that John Sewell had died between 1882 and 1891 as in April 1891 Emma marries Edward Henry Kickham.

There must be records but I have yet to find a John Sewell who fits the bill and if he was a civil engineer he must have left an estate but that also has so far escaped me.

Any thoughts clues, hints or leads are welcome.
