that baptism of Gael's for Johanna is possibly mis-leading - Walton-on-the-Hill IS Kirkdale not Birmingham.

Her birth reg - Liverpool

Births Jun 1878 (>99%)
Smears Johanna Liverpool 8b 44

I wonder if that has been anglizied to Hannah in that family A census

you might want to check www.findmypast.co.uk

I entered John Smears, and there are several pages of overseas births for you to check

I did look at the censuses on ancestry ...................... all the way from 1861 to 1901, he said born in Germany, 1881 said Hamburg, Germany

There are some wild and wonderful mis-transcriptions of the names, but someone has noted the correct versions

1881 Census

Name: John Sinears
[John Smears]
Age: 32
Estimated birth year: abt 1849
Relation: Head
Spouse's name: May
Gender: Male
Where born: Hamburg, Germany

Civil parish: Kirkdale
County/Island: Lancashire
Country: England

Street Address: 9 Cellar St.
Condition as to marriage: Married

Occupation: Foreman

Registration district: West Derby
Sub-registration district: Kirkdale

John Sinears 32
May Sinears 19 Wife, Ginger Beer Maker <<<<< Mary
Wilhelmina Sinears 12
Suisia Sinears 9 <<< Louisa
John Sinears 8
Mary Sinears 7
Luie Sinears 4
Johunue Sinears 2

It does say 19 on the image for Mary's age. I wonder if she was his second wife?

BUT there is also a John Smears, with 2 siblings George and Maria as visitors on the 1851 Census ............ and they say they were born in Woolwich, Kent

1851 Census

Name: John Smears
Age: 6
Estimated birth year: abt 1845
Relation: Visitor
Gender: Male
Where born: Woolwich, Kent, England

Civil parish: Woolwich
Town: Woolwich
County/Island: Kent
Country: England

Registration district: Greenwich
Sub-registration district: Woolwich Arsenal

Robt Hazell 30 Gunner Royal Artillery
Mary Ann Hazell 22
Mary Isabella Hazell 2
Willm Hy Hazell 4 MO
John Smears 6
George Smears 4
Maria Smears 2

IF this is the same John, then it implies that his father was a soldier ............. and as such you may find his birth registered in the overseas GRO ..... which is what is shown on findmypast.

Have you found John and Mary on census earlier than 1901?
Perhaps there are more clues there.

It may be that John's father was working overseas or had an Army posting.
Have you looked on the Access to Archives site to see if John has any naturalisation papers.?
