Sorry to hear that too, Gail. We all do look at these things on their faces as a lark, but of course everyone does have close family members who are gone and missed to whom these searches relate. Like my dad ... the greatx3 grandson of Mary Castle. ;)

If you manage to trace yours to Wiltshire by any chance, well, we'll be cousins. Mine may actually have come from Box, Wiltshire!

Oh, and after some years of trying to exclude Barnard Castle (and Barnard College ...) from my searches ... I discovered that the parents of my grx3 grandfather were, yes, Barnard and Castle. Aargh.

Madmeg Report 31 Aug 2010 23:43

Okay, I see you have Haydn in your tree, clearly a close relative. Sorry if I upset you about it, not intended.

Gail

Gail Report 31 Aug 2010 20:50

WOW people.......you have been busy!!!!

Thanks ever so much

Madmeg, Haydn is the father of my first husband. Unfortunately, I was widowed quite young. I have come to a standstill with my own tree, so thought I would try reasearching this strand instead. I don't know a great deal about the Castle family as Haydn and his wife Irene divorced when my first husband was still very young.

I believe he married May Box as his mothers maiden name was Box and it is the only marriage I can find that fits (Castle and Box that is!)

Thanks again for all your help everyone ... I have some starters to work from now

Gail

Clever Choccy!

I can't see a birth for Sarah Jane Wootton (a Sarah Simmons 1873 Blean is on the 1891 census, Sarah S).

John, Emily and Thomas Wootton all registered as Wootton at birth.

James, Henry, Elizabeth and Charles all registered as CASTLE at birth.

Sarah Jane Wootton married James Edward Castle in 1904 -

Wootton Sarah Jane Eastry 2a 2287

John, Emily and Thomas possibly illegitimate if the William Wootton on the census is her brother.

The 1901 census for Deal in Kent is a 'missing census record', so looks unlikely that they will be found in 1901.

(Piece RG 13/835 Deal and Piece RG13/836 Deal are missing from 1901 census)

Search trees, MM. ;) Only one person has that Haydn!

Madmeg

Madmeg Report 31 Aug 2010 00:14

What to do depends on what proof you have so far. You say you "believe" he married May Box in 1927. What makes you believe that? Do you have the son Haydn in your family tree already? Is this a direct ancestor or just a branch? I am conscious of going down a route that might not be the right one.

Please confirm what you know to be absolutely true.

Thanks everyone for your help. I guess I will have to invest in some certificates. Your time and help is much appreciated

Interesting couple I can't find in 1901 or 1911 - married same quarter as HW's birth:

Yes, Haydn b 1939, mmn Box.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 31 Aug 2010 00:02

Yeah, looking around, seems hopeless without at least a mother's name from the birth cert.

His father's name (if he knew it, or didn't make one up for his own reasons even if he knew it as my gr-grfather did) should be on his marriage certificate, but best to start with the birth cert.

If it just gives a mother, even, we'll have her to look for.

Janey, he had a son, Haydn, in 1939 who was born in Eastry (other children were also born in the area)

I believe he got married in 1927 to May Box in Eastry.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 30 Aug 2010 23:49

Gail - I'm suspecting maybe he was born to unmarried parents and registered in his mother's surname and is hiding in 1911 under a stepfather's surname.

This is assuming that you do have evidence of his existence post 1911, which I'm not seeing any of!

Dee -- mine was Mary born around 1760 probably (married 1781, I was lucky to find), other than that, I have no clue ... but there's a decent chance her son was a bigamist!
