Maybe send for that marriage and hope it comes up with her being aged about 45 a widow and her fathers name Mr Lewis?
Which would make it pretty well on the way to being the correct Catherine I would have thought.
Unless she lied on it of course....

But at some point you will have to send for some certs just to rule them out if nothing else...

I have a document folder of dud ones(Surname Wood in London is hard too),as I know do quite a few others on here.

Took me 7 tries to find my G Grandads correct death cert..!

I find this marriage interesting
Is it after Thomas and Catherine would have seperated?.

Name: Catherine A Riordan
Spouse Surname: Stead<<<<<<<<<John
Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1929
Registration district: Bedwellty
Registration county (inferred): Monmouthshire
Volume Number: 11a
Page Number: 139

I dont see a death for her in Wales or any death of that name to suit an 1884 birth though

But neither is there a birth for that name that I can find.

On "search Trees" on here there is a person called Kelly with a Elizabeth Riordan born Glamorgan 1902.

It may be worth sending her a message to see if she knows anything about Catherine Ann Lewis/Riordan?

Elizabeth Rebecca Riordan is also on a couple of trees on Ancestry and have the parents as John James Riordan and Catherine Ann Lewis.

The 1911 entry of Tylor John Riordan should read Tudor John Riordan.
He was born 1904 and married in1929.
All in Pontypridd district.

I really am struggling to find anything at all for you Dave.

David.
Can you say when and where Thomas Jones died?

I ask a lot of questions I know, but if I dont ask I cant find out if you know the answers or not and every scrap of info helps to make a picture to try and be able to help.

I dont think your mothers parents married Legally but lived together and Catherine just took his name to look respectable.

Did Thomas Jones "remarry"at all?

David

David Report 8 Sep 2010 10:43

word of mouth but unconfirmed i was told that catherine was a bit older than thomas, after the birth of my mother they split and catherine stayed in wales, thomas and my mother moved to i think southsea/portsmouth area then to wargrave/crazies hill in berkshire but i have no other detail

Might he have been a miner before he was a confectioner.
Its just that this man is born same place as Catherine Ann Lewis /Riordan.

Edit...
But prob not him as that couple went on to have children until 1920 and I believe Beatrice Maud Jones may have died in 1973..

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 7 Sep 2010 22:07

There do not seem to be any more births to that couple after the last one on the 1911 census.

The only other birth of Riordan/Lewis is this one

Births Sep 1920
Riordan Richard J Lewis Merthyr T. 11a 1749

And I would say this is his parents marriages.

Marriages Sep 1919
Lewis Rachel Riordan Merthyr T. 11a 2044
Riordan Daniel G Lewis Merthyr T. 11a 2044

I have checked Alma street number on 1911,none of those names there.

Maiden names of mothers were not included in the indexs until late 1911 and onward I am afraid,so its not possible to do that..

I had this up from earlier today but got called away and have only just got back.

Do you know what sort of year Catherine was born please?

I have been unable to find a death of John James Riordan in the indexs before 1923,nor on WW1 deaths.

So maybe if this is Catherine he didnt die but they just parted,so Catherine was unable to marry Thomas?

David

David Report 7 Sep 2010 21:42

true but i am not sure, he died in fairmile hospital in 1955 aged 68 but on the records from the hospital there were several dates of birth so not sure ?

Astra

Astra Report 7 Sep 2010 21:37

Thank you David you have answered my next question which was when was he born according to his death certificate.
I don't think the above will be him as there is too much discrepancy in his age.

David

David Report 7 Sep 2010 21:30

i have from thomas death certificate that he was born 1887 so that is not that far away so real possible will have to do some more digging, thanks, could you look at the birth of the children and see if there is a maiden name for mother ?
thank you
