Find Ancestors

The problem is if you share your Private tree with someone and they then put that information onto a Public tree, whoever looks at the public tree can help themselves to the information.
I have over the years sent information to a relative in the USA and she puts everything onto her Ancestry tree. I've contacted several people who can't tell me what their relationship is to my late parents, just say they saw it on another tree so it must be correct.
Well yes, I know the information is correct, I spent enough time and money researching it, if they had done their own research they would know they had followed the wrong . family.
There's even 1 person has my gg grandfather married to 3 women at the same time and on census records 20 years after his death even though they are showing the actual date of death .

Is the mundia site part of Ancestry ? It seems to be

My tree on Ancestry is private, but I've just been on this site, and there it is, in full view for anyone to see. My cousins tree is also there in full view, and I can't see it on Ancestry! I've contacted Ancestry, and if I don't get a satisfactory answer, then I will be closing my Ancestry account.

and sorry lorraine i don't agree with you as far as i'm concerned they are mine they are my relatives and ancestors i have worked hard to fine and cost me a small fortune. plus free bmd and other sites does not give you every thing.
i do open my tree to people who think they have a connection and they do the same for me. if there's no connection they dont copy anything, if there is a connection some say copy what you want, or i will ask permission if i can.and they ask me, and i only take what i regard as my line of family nothing else but this person has taken everyone he is no relation therefore why must he have all names. every time i log in his names there with another load of names from someone elses tree

Yes I agree Lorraine but still think it would be good manners to contact someone first before taking all their tree. Plus I have spent a small fortune on certificates to get it right.I made mine private after someone copied it and all my photos only 1 of which was relevant to her tree.. She did at least remove them all but the relevant photo when I asked . So a lesson learned

I understand you are upset but someone coping the names from your tree onto theres is not stealing, they do not belong to you, they are easily obtainable from freebmd, parish record, igi etc.

This is what it says on Ancestry

This setting makes your tree "Private" so that it can't be viewed as a Public Member Tree. Note that the information from your tree will still be indexed for searching, but those who find your information can't view your tree without your permission.
What does this mean?
Even if you don't share your tree, other members can still learn if a specific deceased individual is in your tree, in addition to the birth year and birthplace of the person and your username (but no personal information about you).
They can then contact you anonymously through the Connection Service on Ancestry.com sites to request more information. Keep in mind that members who want to learn from your tree may also have helpful information about your tree to offer you in exchange.


Also prevent your tree from being found in the search index.
Note: although your tree will instantly become public or private, it usually takes about a week or more to be reflected in the search index.


So I don't see how they can make a Private Tree, Public on another site

Chris I would be interested to know which site Ancestry have put Private Trees. Mine is private and I do not wish it to be open to just anyone.

On here no one has access to your tree unless you give them permission....If you do give them permission then they are free to take the info and do with it what they wish unless you stipulate otherwise. Even then they can chose to ignore your requests.

On Ancestry, the site Deborah is refering to as info from her tree being posted on, you have the option to make a tree 'Public' which means everything you post is available to view....Or 'Private' which means your tree is not open to all and someone has to contact you to have access.

I didnt know that family trees are open to everyone, I thought others only seen them if you wanted them to.

I do understand how you feel because the same thing happened to me, probably by the same person. However I think his motives for copying are meant to be helpful to others.
Although my tree was copied I did get valuable information from the tree, which assisted me in finding my Great Grand Father.
I know he has also helped another member with her ancestors.
Try to be positive, as a result of this you may be contacted by relatives you never knew you had.
