The best you can do is ask that any living persons are removed.

If a person copies your tree and the info is in the public domain, BMD indexes, parish registers ect, then they can argue they are free to add the info to their tree....You have just pointed them in the right direction to find the info themselves.

Whether they can morally do it is another arguement and one that regularly crops up on here.

Personally if I have been given info, that I have then confirmed by my own research, I will always note in my source records the originator for the info. I believe that they should have recoginition for their work.

Likewise I would hope somone would note me in their source records but sadly it rarely happens.

I 'mark' my certs/records that I copy to other people and I can't tell you how many times I get the same copies back attributed to other people's research, some of whom I haven't the faintest idea who they are!!!!!

hi julie
exactly what can they tell you about your relatives.
this person isn't even a relative or blood.
this person just wants to collect names.

I know how you feel Debbie & it hurts

Someone added my Nan to their tree, this person was a very distant relative of my Aunts husband, claiming if anyone want to know anything about their family all you need to do is ask.....well what could they tell anyone about my nan, absolutely nothing........Cos they didn't know her

Just to add, that on Ancestry you can make your tree"private" then no one can see it without they contact you first, even then you are not obliged, to give access.

Having a public tree on Ancestry is one of the easiest to copy.

hi lorraine
your right but i put my tree is on the sites so people can see and help or vice versa,
if they ask your permission to add names theres nothing wrong in that but stealing is another thing. they even added wrong birth places at the beginning and argued the toss i was wrong.

If you put your tree on a public site like this or ancestry there is nothing you can do about it.

The lesson is dont put full details of your tree on a public site if you dont want people to copy it.

All the info is in the public domain and you dont have copy write to it

You can contact the person who has copied you tree and ask them to take the names off but they are under no obligation to do so

take your tree off the public sites and and save it on a disc for your own use only.

Unfotuattly there are plenty of people of will copy trees instead of doing the hard work themselves.

some person has copied the whole of my tree and i am so angry with it, my tree and my ancestors has nothing to do with this person.
just gone onto ancestry and there is all the members of my tree on this site also, they have copied every single person of it. whats wrong with them is it the bigger the tree the better they look?. i have found that when i come on here they have added a new more names to there tree and it's not just one it's about 10 onwards.
i have done all the work myself with a help from the lovely people on here or family members. not to mention the cost of items, what gives these people the right to take all your hard work makes me so angry!! i stopped them looking through my tree so they must have got the info of my ancestry one down to the very last detail. they added some more info to there's .
wheres the fun in pinching other peoples hard work.
a very angry debbie
do i make contact or what?
