Still continuing my hunt for my orphans Constance Parkhouse born6/5/ 1915 Exeter Devon and her sister born 22/5/1907 Magaret (may have been Meg orPeggy). They were orphaned in 1920 and have no idea where they went. A brother,Charles ended up in an orphanage and eventually lived in B'ham.-but he's gone now-and never spoke of them to anyone. They were childrenof Ellen Parkhouse and Charles. I have tried before but as the is new info appearing all the time thought I'd have another go! Have never found a mrige foreither-tried severa but all falseleads. (Not Penaluna.)any ideas please?

I am sure you already know this

Until 1926, when the first Act was passed which regulated child adoption, it was an informal and generally secretive procedure.

Constance would have been 5 in 1920 (11 in 1926) and Margaret 13 in 1920 (19 in 1926)

So Constance and Margaret could have been 'informally' adopted before 1926.....And if they were 'adopted' they may have taken the families name, hence why you cannot find marriages for them.

Do you know which Orphanage Charles went to? Was it in Devon?

I would start by contacting the local record office in Devon. They may have records of where 'orphaned' children would have been initially placed...Or should, at the very least, be able to point you in the right direction for further research.

In my own research I had four childern orphaned in London in the early 1900s and placed in a Workhouse by their Grandmother.

Searching the Workhouse and associated records I found that two girls went to a 'New School' (An Orphanage by any other name) and the other two sisters were taken in by two sisters of the deceased mother.

Good luck
Chris

that be them. Charles died in France in 1917 and Ellen in Exeter in 1920 of Flu/meningitis. Constances school record simply says-left the district! not very helpful-poor little things.a relative of Charles did say that when they were little Charles and his wife used to go to devon and visit someone out in the country-maybe called Meg/Peg/Peggy-she was only little so very vague-but maybe somthing in it.have everything backwards-but nothing forwards.

I contacted the devon record ofice but they said there were no survivng records for that time of exeter orphanages. There was some family in bristol-but can't see anything around there (Jessie and Wallace Sheppard). Ellens brothers and sister had died apart from Jessie. yes thats them in 1911. there a another baby Gladys too-she died only 18 months of bronchitis.

Well apart from seeing if they are in someones tree, the only place that the birthdate is any use is in the deaths and as they would be very old now.
