Thank you all for your help, I have so many hand written notes, It will take me some time to up load it all.
Facts: My G. Grandmother - Ada Giles DOB 1874 in Cardiff, Her Father - Charles Giles DOB 1834 in Gillingham Her Mother - Elizabeth Barber DOB 1850 in Broom, Somerset
Ada Giles married Thomas Walter Carver 1/12/1906. Ada is listed as 31 years - spinster - living at Comet Street, Cardiff - Father Charles Giles – occupation - Coal Trimmer. Thomas Walter Carver listed as 33 years - living at Comet Street, Cardiff - occupation Marriner - Father Robert Carver (deceased) – occupation – Architect. The witnesses were Charles Giles and Kate Giles
Ada had 3 children - Queenie, before she was married then Doris, my grandma and then Clifford.
I have all the info relating to Ada and the children but I can not find any info on Thomas Walter which is why I wondered if he didn't use the Thomas bit.
What my mum has said: Her grandfather was always known as "Walter" and we didn't know that he was a Thomas until I got the Marriage cert. Doris (my grandma) always said that Ada told her that her grand father was an architect from Liverpool. Walter was a mariner and went to see. One day he came home from sea, there was a row and Doris and Cliff ended up in a children's home. This was after the 1911 census
This is where it all started from:
This is the only Robert Carver I have been able to find as an architect – (which Astra kindly pointed me towards) who also had a son called Walter, but I do understand what you say about the dates.
On the 1881 census there is a : Robert Carver 57 born Cumberland, Dissington and listed as living in Liverpool as an architect, Rebecca Carver 52 born Wales Ada 15 Daughter Born Wales Amy 13 Daughter Born Wales Ernest Parry 3 Grand son Born Wales Norah Parry 1 Grand Daughter Born Wales
Tracing back to 1871 (this is one of the ones you came up with) There is a Walter on here.
Name: Robert Carver Age: 47 Estimated birth year: abt 1824 Relation: Head Spouse's name: Rebecca Carver Gender: Male Where born: Distington Hondon, Cumberland, England Civil parish: Leighton Ecclesiastical parish: Leighton in Trelystan County/Island: Montgomeryshire Country: Wales Registration district: Forden Sub-registration district: Welshpool ED, institution, or vessel: 1 Household schedule number: 6 Household Members: Name Age Robert Carver 47 Occ: Superintendent of Works Rebecca Carver 42 Elorfield Carver 12 Louisa Carver 11 Frederick Carver 9 Clara Carver 6 Ada Carver 5 Amy Carver 3 Walter Carver 9 Months - I have this birth cert which puts him as born 11/06/1870 mothers former name Rebecca Reese Margaret Macdonald 21 Jane Kinsey 35
I have found this family and marriages that tie in with the children on 1861 census, 1871 census, 1881 census, 1891 census, 1901 census and 1911 between Leighton, Montgomeryshire, Liverpool and Westminster but what I can't find is Thomas Walter Carver
There are 2 Cowbridge Roads in Cardiff - East and West – as P Wilford is listed as “Occupier” on the death cert, it may be the other road, not the one which is St David's hosp. On this death cert Walter is listed as 73 in April 1944 which would make him born 1870/1 This would tie in with the birth cert but again not tie in with marriage cert.
Maybe I have gone totally up the wrong tree but listening to “family legends” makes it quite hard.
I do thank you for all your help.
Please be for you go searching for anything and taking up your time., ask me the questions as I may still have more answers that would make sense to someone else, I think I may be going round in circles.
Thanks again Caroline xx

Cowbridge Road East on which St David's Hospital is situated is primarily all businesses and shops whilst Cowbridge Road West is primarily domestic properties

on Cowbridge Road West lives a Mrs Cope

Thanks for that Ann Mrs Cope doesn't mean anything to me, I will try to go to the Glamorgan records office to see if they have electoral registers for 1939 or 1945
|
the Records Office has moved to Leckwith apparently
