Hi Kathleen,

Thank you for your help.

My g.g.grandmother's full name before marriage was Justina Maria Stepney Gulston. After she married its seems that she used the name Stepney( as a christian name) Collier. I am somewhat confused about Rosa(elind) being her daughter as it would appear from the information on Genes that maybe she was her niece?

I got lots of amazing information today from several very kind and very helpful people and I am SO grateful.

The usual piece of advice we the helpers give to posters is that IF AT ALL POSSIBLE stay around for 10-15 minutes after you have posted a request.


Because we are from all over the world, there is usually someone on the boards looking to help, and it is not at all unusual for a helper to respond within seconds ........ literally!


And that response may well be a question asking for clarification before a helper can proceed with the search.


That doesn't mean sitting here with the thread open in front of you ........... but do please check back every 2 or 3 minutes to see if there is a posting.


The thank you on the open thread as much as anything is a sign that you HAVE seen the postings ..... there are 3 or 4 people who spend time looking for threads where there have been responses but no apparent feedback from the requester.

They will then send a pm to the requestor telling them that there have been postings, and also telling them how to get back to the thread ....... which many newbies do not know how to do!

They expect GR to send an email saying "new postings'. GR doesn't do that!

GR is very difficult to navigate and to understand its system at first, and these ladies feel that the best way they can help is by doing this little service.

Heartfelt thanks for all the information you supplied about my family. I am very grateful.


(This is the general thank you I posted, retrieved from my threads.)

All the people who responded with information also emailed me privately and I responded to each one by return email and thanked them for their help. None of them wrote back suggesting that I publicly acknowledge their good deed. I do not know ALL the in's and out's of this website, I am new to this. I had no idea that people might respond within 15 minutes and had I known that I would probably have returned to the website at that time eager for information. I thought waiting 24 hours to see if ANYONE responded was the best course of action.

And in fact a majority of responses on page 1 were added within **15 minutes** of the initial post.

I know I get tired of being told what busy lives people lead and how they can't sit at their keyboards 24/7 waiting for other members here, who obviously have no lives, to give answers to their questions. It is considered appropriate to wait a few minutes to see whether there are questions and replies.

In fact, there's a helpful post from the site management pinned at the top of the TTF board that says just that. You won't see it if you're reading a "surname board". You'll have to click at the top of that board where it says "click here" to see where everyone else is reading your post, in among all the many other requests for help.

I saw no general thanks, just the "any info appreciated" in the opening post. And a "thank you!" after another request. Those don't sound like thanks for info already received. It just isn't hard to type those few extra words.

to avoid this kind of comment ...... and yes, I was about to post something like "wot? no thanks for the help received" after having read all the way through ....... may I suggest that in future, you post your thank yous ON THE THREAD itself.


We helpers all like a little bit of acknowledgement ........... and we do look on threads for such. We don't need individual pms


as I said, I was taken aback when I saw your second question without an apparent acknowledgment whatsoever of what had been found for you!

I did NOT know ALL the information contained in this posting before I requested help. As stated, I found my family in the 1891 census and the 1901 census. The information gleaned from this posting has confirmed and added to what I already knew. In the 1891 census it does not mention my g.grandfather's name or all their children. In the 1861 census, that I could not find and was kindly supplied by one of the respondents, it gives me this information and has, therefore, added to my knowledge of my family. Surely, that is the point of a 'help' posting, to expand what we already know? I started off this posting with all the information about my grandfather that I had to date.

I had (prior to your posting above) already written to all respondents individually, thanking them for their very generous help in researching my family INCLUDING YOURSELF! AND I also posted, prior to your comment, a general thank you to all concerned!

Earlier today you sent me a personal email requesting that I check what had been written on this post to date. The reason for what you considered 'a delay' in responding to that information is that I live 7,000 miles from the UK in a different time zone. Hence the delay in responding IMMEDIATELY to any information. I think you need to take this into consideration and not assume that everyone posting on this site lives in the UK time zone.

Once again I would like to thank all those who were generous enough to give of their time to help me find additional members of my family and to expand my family tree for future generations to enjoy. Your help is invaluable to those of us who request help and genuinely appreciated by all.

If you did not know, it would have been nice for you to acknowledge all the work that has been done for you.
