Can we search marriages in Germany?

Griffiths Sydney I Gibbs b1921 in Brighton 2b 376 (died 1955)
married
Christel Ilisch or Elisch? b-1923-1975

prob around the late thirties, early 40,s

My grandad Sydney was in the NAFFI and they were back and forth in the Army (or so my mum says!)

They had one child (Rose) in Brighton, UK (as the rest, icluding my dad were born in Germany)

You can order his birth cert from the GRO webiste. you dont have to prove anything - anyone can apply for just about anyones.

Thanks.

Im meeting up with my aunty very soon (Sydneys 1st daughter) im hoping she has some documents.

How would i go about ordering birth/marriage certs? Do i need to prove im related?

I know my dad (sydneys 4th child) found it hard to get his birth cert as sydney died in 1955 and his mum (sydneys wife) was a polish jew and died in england in 1976...thats where is gets confusing.
Would love to trace sydneys wife (Christel Ilisch) but i have a feeling all the registrations were destroyed during world war 2 x

I do however have sydney I Griffiths birth registration, so i hope to get his certificate..I know he married my nan (Christel) in Germany...again very confusing!

If you are not sure about using that site, enter something you know to be there - find Sydneys birth for a start
Surname GRIFFITHS
First Name SYDNEY
and an appropriate time span in the dates boxes

Can you see his birth?
---------------------------------------

If you want, I can talk you through finding his siblings births.
then you'll perhaps be more confident in finding bits yourself

maybe your parents bith cert will help - they had at least one child - clearly- or you wouldn't be here.

that will name their parents- or even ask them?

Im not 100% that Gibbs and Griffiths even married in Brighton, or Sussex for that matter.

Penny

Penny Report 4 Oct 2010 06:53

no we cant,
as I said, the ONLY way to progress is to send for Sydneys birth cert.

There is no other way.

where have you actually searched for marriages - there are loads

Ria

Thanks you.
Ive searched Gibbs marriages before 1917 and looking for the partners name to be Griffiths...But not found anything as yet.

I havent birth certifcates either!! :(

Can we look at more recent census'?

Penny

There isn't an obvious Griffiths/Gibbs marriage in Brighton itself
nor Sussex.

There are loads of Griffiths/Gibbs marriages 'anywhere' but without first names you are stumped

Cant see how you can progress without his birth cert

have you looked for the Griffiths/Gibbs marriage?

his birth cert will tell you their names.

I feel this will be a hard one (maybe not as hard as Smith, who knows!?)

Ok my Grandad Sydney I Griffiths (1921 Brighton-1955 Blackpool)
Sydney also had a brother Robert and sister Patricia.

I know their mums maiden name is Gibbs. But that is all. I am stuck on that!! Anyhelp with this i will be truely gratefull

Im searching his mother and father.
