Do you have the death certificate for Elizabeth?

If she was a widow that would be stated on the certificate - in which case you would be looking for a death for John between 1911 and 1918.

If John registered the death for her then you know he's definitely alive in 1918.

This looks like it could be the death for Elizabeth McNeill in 1918

Deaths Mar 1918
McNeill Elizabeth A 56 Oldham 8d 915

So, its possible John may not have died in Oldham. Have you traced all the children to see where they ended up? You may find a death for John in a different area if he lived with one of his children.

Looks like his birth was possibly in West Derby, Liverpool - perhaps he died there?
