This is Annie's marriage:

Marriages Mar 1897 (>99%)
Cowen Annie Tynemouth 10b 325
SUTHERLAND Edward Allan Tynemouth 10b 325

The certificate will give you Annie's father's name and occupation. If you know that then you can trace his marriage and find out exactly who Annie's mother was.

oh yes Cowan yet maybe wrong census spelling cos children called Cowen...all this cos my friend was convinced she was related to Sir joseph cowen which is highly unlikely thank you for helping me here friends x

Elaine, don't worry - it happens to all of us! As long as you know you're on the right track with the twins and other children we can work it out.

Elaine

Elaine Report 5 Oct 2010 20:43

MargaretM Report 5 Oct 2010 20:40

We should be able to find Mary with 1 year old Annie on the 1881 census.

MarieCeleste Report 5 Oct 2010 20:40

This is the birth registration for the twins (note how the surname has been spelled):

Births Sep 1886 (>99%)

Cowan Jane Elizabeth Tynemouth 10b 239
Cowan John Tynemouth 10b 239

You need to buy the birth certificate to get the mother's maiden name and father's details.

MarieCeleste Report 5 Oct 2010 20:37

So are you working back over, already knew who the children were and were trying to work out their mother's details?

(If you let us know how you got to the 1891 census then we'll know what direction to go in).

Elaine

Elaine Report 5 Oct 2010 20:33

maybe got the wrong cert yes howden and windy nook and walker for children their definate address was ( birket st Wallsend this is the right family I must have ordered it in a muddle

Elaine, that birth ties in with the reference I posted. Those details don't match the Mary Cowen in the 1891 census. What makes you so sure that the lady in the 1891 census is your Mary Cowen?

Elaine

Elaine Report 5 Oct 2010 20:27

yes i have birth cert but birth was 5/1/1856 at Benwell newcastle

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 5 Oct 2010 20:24

Elaine - is this the census that you've been looking at?

COWEN, Mary Head Married F 35 1856 Howdon Northumberland
COWEN, Annie Daughter F 11 1880 Windy Nook Northumberland
COWEN, Mary Daughter F 8 1883 Walker Northumberland
COWEN, John Son M 4 1887 Walker Northumberland
COWEN, Jane E Daughter F 4 1887 Walker Northumberland

RG number:
RG12 Piece:
4232 Folio:
46 Page:
38

Registration District:
Tynemouth Sub District:
Longbenton Enumeration District:
7 Ecclesiastical Parish:
Christ Church Walker

Civil Parish:
Longbenton Municipal Borough:
Address:
4, Angus Buildings, Fisher Street, Longbenton, Walker County:
Northumberland

Are you sure this is the right person? Cowen is this lady's married name, her maiden name would have been something else. Also, it says this lady was born in Howdon so the registration for that would have been Tynemouth.

I'm confused! Your first post said her mother was Mary Bell but last one said Ruth Bell.
Can't find a marriage of George Cowen to Ruth Bell. There's this one to Mary Bell but it's in Carlisle:

Marriages Dec 1841 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BELL Mary Carlisle 25 48
COWEN George Carlisle 25 48

Elaine, could you give us the names of some of the children, and the years of birth (if known) so we can investigate?
