Richard did die in a mining accident at Hamstead Colliery, Great Barr, there is an account of it here http://www.cmhrc.co.uk/cms/document/1908_10.pdf

His wife had only had one child by 1911 so the grandchildren are not his.

Here is Jane and the early children in 1871 living in West Brom

Thankyou so much for finding all this, definately a lot to take in.

I googled the Hamstead mining disaster and i actually found a photograph of Richard Ashton and his brother in law Thomas Hollyoak who also died in the accident. It was Thomas's widow and children who Harriet (Richards widow) was living with in 1911, both living off compensation. It really is fascinating what you can find with a bit of help.

Still need to try and get my head around Job and John, theres a few things confusing me. I'll have another look through what we've got. Might be back for more help soon.

Thanks again, Abi

P.S Can i ask where you find the information and does it cost you?

Katie

Katie Report 8 Oct 2010 08:08

Glad it's been useful. Some of the info ( births, marriages & deaths ) came from http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl which is free. The census info came from Findmypast which I have a subscription to so it didn't cost me any extra. Let me know if you need any other help.
