George Report 25 Jan 2011 16:42

Back to the MILLER family! Thanks to your advice 3 months ago, I have now established that -
GEORGE b 1851 Engine Driver was then son of -
WILLIAM b1818 Wagonwright born in Middlesex, who was the son of-
GEORGE b 1778 born in Nunburnhope Yorkshire and obviously moved to
Middlesex employed as a Customs Officer.
There, the trail has stalled.
The only information I have found is according to other Trees (both unsourced), that his father was Richerd MILLNER born Circa 1755
Any suggestions please as to how I can progress this further, and is it feasible that the name could change from Miller to Millner .

Once again yor invaluable help would be appreciated.

Hi George,

someone has a tree on Ancestry with this info;

Name: William Miller
Birth: 09 Oct 1817 (9 Oct 1817) - Middlesex
Marriage: 1846 - Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland, England
Parents: George Miller, Sybla Murray
Spouse: Jane Reed

It maybe worth contacting the tree owner to ask about their info??

George Report 29 Oct 2010 21:17

Hi folks. Further to my search on this thread, I have now established via GEORGE MILLER (1851) marriage cert.
that William Miller,Waggonwright is his father.

The problem now arising is that William was born in Middlsex
but exactly where is not known. He does not appear in the 1841 census but I know he married in Gateshead in 1843 As his birth date is 1918
I suppose I must now resort to Parish Records. If I do this and identify one or more possibilities, how can I verify which is the correct one. If I obtain a marriage cert, this will only give his fathers occupation (if he was still alive) and I'm uncertain if this information would be of any relevance in relation to Parish Records

Your invaluable help and advice would again be appreciated

Janey Canuk

Thanks for that mine if information. Everything seems to fit including the birthplace of William which I had identified as Middlesex

George, you have Lucy's mother's surname from the 1901. (The image does say mother-in-law.)

You have FreeBMD.

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

So you have the marriage between George MillEr and Lucy Swan.

And you did see the 1851 census and birth I posted above?

The 1851 census gives you both George's parents' full names. Thank goodness for in-laws!

My apologies crediting your post re MILLAR to Anne Marie

George Report 6 Oct 2010 22:51

Anne Marie

Interesting info regarding remarrying. Everything ties in exept the surname MILLar instead of MILLer

Could that be a census error. as its a huge coincidence

Janey Cannuck.

Low Lambton is very close to Penshaw.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 6 Oct 2010 22:41

1881 census, searching for address "low lambton"

Low Lambton Farm and Low Lambton Staith (?) are addresses in PENSHAW.

(I'd googled Low Lambton and seen a reference to the farm, so used it as an address to search, as farm names show up as addresses in 1881 at Ancestry.)

The place name is spelled PAINSHAW in the 1861, reg dist Houghton-Le-Spring, but most people with their place of birth are speling it PENSHER.

So Dee's 1861 then:

Name: George Miller
Age: 20
Estimated birth year: abt 1851
Relation: Son
Father's Name: William Miller
Mother's Name: Jane Miller
Where born: Pensher, Durham, England
Civil parish: Gateshead

seems to be the ticket.

Do we have 1851?

Gender: Male
Where born: London, Middlesex, England

Thanks for that.It looks like the Marriage Cert. is the next best bet rather than the Birth Cert.

It;s looking like he was William the Wagon wrights son and now the birthplace tallies with the 2 census returns. 1871 and 1891.

If you do get the marriage cert in 1874 the witnesses maybe family members too.

You are correct...he was a butchers apprentice at age 14.

Later he was a Stoker (Railway Fireman presumably), and later an Engine Driver

As William was a Wagonwright, could it be son following in Fathers footsteps with a Railway connection?

George is a butcher and father William Wagonwright

I don't think either of these 1871 census Miller families are yours George. George born 1850 was a Stoker, a Glass maker and butcher were good occupations so why change to a stoker?
