I have found a marriage of James Meldrum (possible William's son) & Catherine Donaldson 1869, on the 1881 Census they have children named James D and Helen plus other children, I am wondering if this is a grandson of James Meldrum & Helen Watson.

It looks like I will have trouble finding out if this is indeed is descendants.

Have bought some credits from scotlandspeople, and tried to look at the image, but it tells me to download plug-in java, still cannot get to see image.

Will send a query to them later today, to try & figure out why I can't view.

It's unlikely - What you normally get priot to 1855 is the name of the bride and groom only. Occasionally the father's name is given. What would show the parents name in Scotland is the death cert - if after 1855.

Another query, I have found a marriage between William Meldrum & Catherine McGregor 1841, Dunfernlime does it show parents names?

Catherine

Catherine Report 30 Dec 2010 12:57

Don't think so:

Yes thanks. Further to the 1841 Census are the McFeggins related to the Meldrums?

Catherine

Catherine Report 30 Dec 2010 10:25

You may have the marriage:

2 11/12/1811 MELDRUM JAMES HELEN WATSON/FR3297 M DUNFERMLINE /FIFE 424/00 0100 0550

No children registered to them on SP. Again did not have to register at that time.

Thanks for the info. I will now have to try & find information on William & James junior, I presume there might have been other children, as there is a 7 year break between William & James.

All James Meldrum's deaths between 1841 and 1851in Fife. Even if you open these they provide very little information. I know from previously opening a couple in my own searches. Indeed the death may not be registered as was not required until 1855.

Thank you Catherine,

It looks like it could be the right family, William signed Helen's death record.
Can you see a death of James before 1851.

Hi all,

Can someone please check the Scottish 1841 Census, to see who Helen/Ellen Meldrum born c1781 Fife is living with, I am trying to find when her husband James died.

On the 1851 Helen is listed as living at Goldfrum st, Dunfermline with her son Richard 38 and grandson James 5.

Thanks

No problem Mel, I only just put it on this thread this morning as I saw from your "Help Clinic" posting that you had this thread. If I see anything else, I'll post on here.

Thanks rootgatherer,

That is a possibility, it fits in with the other children who were born, the family I have is - Richard died 1871 and his wife died 1866.

If indeed Alec belongs to this family, a nephew was also known as Alec, even though he was registered at birth as his fathers name!!

Sorry I took so long to reply, but did not expect to get an answer to this thread.

Mel, Further to your request on the help centre, there is an Alexander Meldrum in the Dunfermline poor house in 1871.

Whole list of names but no other Meldrum.

Name: Alexander Meldrum
Age: 11
Estimated birth year: abt 1860
Relationship: Inmate
Gender: Male
Where born: Dunfermline, Fifeshire
Registration Number: 424/2
Registration district: Dunfermline Landward
Civil Parish: Dunfermline Landward
County: Fife
Address: Landward Parist Of Dunfermline
Occupation: Scholar
ED: Dunfermline Poorhouse
Household schedule number: 1
Line: 9
Roll: CSSCT1871_72

I wondered if that could be the Alexander who was the subject of your query. If he was in the poor house without a parent, he may have been orphaned young and not remember his parents?

There is also a birth on Familysearch.org for an Alexander b. Inverkeithing 1860, illegitimate son of Isabella Meldrum.

Thanks Kath,

What I have been told, apparently on Helen's death record early 1860's I think, it was signed by William, son.

I will contact her tomorrow, to see what other details she has.

Thanks again

Kath
