are you able to find out if he had any children in North london. and if he married another Mary? I also notice his name didn;'t change. My dad was sure he'd changed it to Hicks.

Helen, this is it!
My nan elizabeth Burridge and my grandad Robert.

And you 've told me something not even my dad would ve known. As when we lived in London Battersea we used to say that there was 2 lots of Leggs, one of which was well known in Battersea as the coal porters. We didn't think we were part of the coal porters side and now it looks like we were. I wish you could see my smile x

So charles must have died before 1915?

Joanne

Joanne Report 12 Oct 2010 12:01

This is my grandad Helen, he died during one of the bombings.

Helen

Helen Report 12 Oct 2010 12:04

His father John was also a coal porter, so the marriage of john and Fanny may not be right as he was a shoe maker

Helen this is a possilbilty, but as i said, Charles commited bigamy. It maybe that my Grandad Robert said he was dead? I'm not sure? Charley Boy throws a spanner into the works every time!.
Not sure if you are able to look at calendonian rd and the name Hicks or poss cope?

Mary Report 12 Oct 2010 12:39

So is it John 1854 and Fanny had Charley/Charles Francis 1877 he married Mary Ann and had Robert 1897.Charley then went on to commit bigamy??

1911 Robert 1897 living with his grandad, who on original view says he is married not a widow. The original is a bit messy ,they look as though they were a little confused as to who was who.

Had another look at 1911 there is Legg married from Guilford ,that is Fanny.

Charles francis Legg married Mary Ann Alden O/N/D 1894 Wandsworth 1d 1027.

Maryb

Could this be Charleys 1st wife

1911 43 Winstanley Rd Wandsworth.

Mary Ann Legg 1877 Battersea S W house work married 16years so matches 1894 O/N/D marriage.
4 children born 2 died.
Edwin Edward 1904 son battersea.Actually born and reg Sept 1903 maybe died 1917 in Wandsworth 1d 515.

Thanks Mary
I think this is right - Charley/Charles Francis 1877 he married Mary Ann and had Robert 1897.They also had 6 other children but all died apart from my grandad Robert. Charley then went on to commit bigamy and fled over to islington, calendodian rd and married again and had another 7 children. He may have changed his name to Hicks and i am not 100% but he may have married another Mary.

My dad always said the lady called Fanney (his nan?) surname was truelove.?

Mary

Mary Report 12 Oct 2010 15:34

I did find a marriage for a Charles hicks 1908 in islington to possible Mary Brown or Emily Lydia Law.

Couldn't find Charlie Hicks or legg in 1911 census.
