The witnesses do not appear to be family. Names not distinct but appear to be L R H Burnett and A Campbell. One of my cousins tells me that Thomas Richard Renshaw was from a quite well to do family, and he married their maid, and was promptly disowned, which could be why he fibbed about his age.

Thomas and Maud per the certificate also gave the same address, which was probably not the done thing in those days.

I saw that one, but it was a few years too early for me.

When I saw the mother was Alice Maud, I was expecting the father to be Henry Ernest, the other half of that 1900 'double marriage'.

That makes three Alice Mauds at least, hitching up with a male King in London.

Alan, going back to your grandad's age on the marriage certificate - he may have fibbed and said he was of full age if marrying without parental consent. Who were the witnesses?

Alan

Alan Report 31 Oct 2010 17:40

Thanks for your help. This all looks very promising!

I suppose she may have fibbed to get the job, but someone must have been caring for Maud meanwhile.

I tried to find a baptism for John William King c1904 as mentioned in the 1911 census, but no match with an Alfred and Alice Maud as parents - I was hoping that if we could find such a baptism and with Alfred described as 'bricklayer' this time, it would clinch it, but it wasn't gonna be that easy...

Astra

Astra Report 31 Oct 2010 17:30

She is noted as single in the 1901 but I can't locate a definite birth for her in Norwich.

Adding to the marriage info Astra gave earlier - I think two brothers may have married two sisters:

Marriages Jun 1900 (>99%)
Acock Alice Maud Poplar 1c 859
Acock Clara Annie Poplar 1c 859
King Alfred Franklin Poplar 1c 859
King Henry Ernest Poplar 1c 859

Astra, the 1901 entry for Alice M King does look quite convincing. Was her marital status given?

Wonder where Alfred and baby Maud had got to. It would be good to get a handle on a pob/dob for Alfred but it's proving elusive so far...

Sorry Alan, I had edited it back to Alfred from Albert (a slip on my part)just now, but you'd already seen the wrong version.

Alan

Alan Report 31 Oct 2010 17:22

The name is Alfred King (definitely not Albert) and he was a bricklayer.

Alan

Alan Report 31 Oct 2010 17:20

There are no Xs visible but the whole certificate looks as if it was written by the same official.

Thanks. This certainly looks promising. It might also explain the age of 19 on the marriage certificate. I have never used baptism records. Are they on Genes Reunited?

Astra

Astra Report 31 Oct 2010 17:13

That 1911 looks extremely promising Kucinta.

Kucinta

Kucinta Report 31 Oct 2010 17:12

Oh well, thanks for checking and ruling out the marriage anyway.

Still looks like the Alfred who 'married' Alice Maud was deceased by census 1911.

Checking the marriages Alfred King married Clara Annie in 1900
