Hi Graham,

I doubt very much that your G Grandmother was the lady born in 1873 and we seem to have very little information on her. Do you have her death certificate? If not this maybe a line to concentrate on as this would give her year of birth and possibly more info if she died in Scotland.

Do you know more about your Grandmother born in 1889, did she have siblings? Do you know where she was living in 1901?

Any other info may help to unravel this for you.

Sorry Mary, wasn't ignoring you hun. Thanks for the offer of the image but it maybe more beneficial for Graham, if he wants to answer your very kind offer?

For some reason (in Scotland) middle names got 'added' on marriage, death certs. even on childrens birth certs. that have no relevance to their own birth name. I've seen this happen a lot in Scottish certs.

There is an Elizabeth Anderson born to parents David Anderson and Ann McDonald in 1863

ELIZABETH ANDERSON
Birth:
25 JUL 1863 Alyth, Perth, Scotland

and one in 1855 to another couple of the same names

ELIZABETH ANDERSON
Birth:
14 DEC 1855 Guthrie, Angus, Scotland

Parents:
Father: DAVID ANDERSON
Mother: ANN MC DONALD

The Elizabeth Anderson born in Guthrie, according to 1871 census, father David was a mason.

The Elizabeth born in Alyth, father David was a seaman

Elizabeth's sister Margaret has Spark as a middle name

This is Elizabeth Sparks Anderson, 1873/4, in 1901. As you see, she is not married, so she can't be your relation who married James Hughes.

Yessssssssss!! Success!!! Found her :-)) You were absolutely spot on Liz in Scotland. :-))

It's this one Graham.

1855 ANDERSON ELIZABETH F GUTHRIE /ANGUS 291/00 0017

It's not a very good image, and I can't make out the date of David and Ann's marriage, it's either 1840 or 1841 Glasgow - so you might need to ask SP if they can get a better image for you......if you want to purchase credits and view it yourself of course. It also give details of how many children living and died.

I would offer you the image but I assume you don't want them as you didn't acknowledge my last offer.

Mary

Hi Mary,

Could it be 1840 in Gorbals? Ann McDonald was born Lanark/Lanarkshire

DAVID ANDERSON

Contrary Mary Report 13 Nov 2010 23:04

Hi Liz

Yes, I would say that it's almost certainly that one. :-)) It's not a very clear image and although I can make out the 184 and Glasgow, the last number is either a tall thin 0 or a 1.

Their ages are shown as 37 (on the 1855 birth cert) which also ties in with the 1871 census you posted.

Thanks again everyone and thanks for the offer of copies Mary. I wont take the copies for now.
My Grandmother Elizabeth Stewart Hughes doesn't appear on the 1901census for England so I guess she was still in Scotland at that time. By the time of the 1911 census she was married to my Grandfather (in 1910) Frank Hindle Daniel and living in Manchester. Unfortunately I cannot find her or Frank in the 1911 census although two of his siblings appear.Unfortunately my Dad who may have known all this died in 1994. I am in touch with a cousin (another grandchild of Elizabeth Stewart Hughes) and she may have some certificates etc.

Name Age
Ann J Hughes 45 >> doesn't say Ann J on image... can't work the name out maybe LIZ?? She is a widow, born Scotland
Annie McDonald Hughes 16
Maggie Anderson Hughes 14
Elizabeth Stewart Hughes 11
Isabella Duran Hughes 10
Chastine Waltera Hughes 5 >> Born Manchester
Sarah Mary Hughes 3 >> Born Manchester

All the other children were born Scotland.

The older children names all tie in with the Scottish 1891 census I found and the middle name for Maggie surely confirms the mothers maiden name and Annie's middle name confirms her Grandmothers maiden name.

Batman's Daughter you're a star ! That's got to be her. And thanks to **Liz in Scotland ** and ***alviegal*** and everyone else. The fact that my grandmother had a sister called Maggie "Anderson" Hughes pretty much ties it all together. My only question has to be that the birth record on Scotlands people does say that the mothers name was Elizabeth Spark Hughes ??
I've just looked at the 1901 census image and enlarged it to 200%. The Heads name looks to me to read Mrs J Hughes. (Look at the M in Maggie - its the same. look at the r in Anderson - its the same and look at the s in Thomas Nightingale on the same page - its the same).
For those who don't know Chorlton upon Medlock formerly known as Chorlton Row is a district of south Manchester where the Daniel family lived from the early 19th century until the mid 20th century.
