Now I really have gone

Victoria Report 26 Nov 2010 16:51

Think you deserve a couple of large bars of chocolate. I know I keep saying thanks but again thank you! I'm doing all of this side of my tree for my husband. His great aunt is sooo excited with all information I find out so I wish I could pass that onto you as well.

Enjoy your rest!

And here's Martha Bren and her siblings
Parents are Peter Bren, born c1787 Reading a shoemaker and Martha. Unfortunately I can't find a marriage for Peter and Martha but here are the christenings for their children, again St Laurence

6 Jan 1771 Peter
30 March 1775 Hannah
19 Feb 1777 Martha
12 April 1782 William
9 April 1784 Daniel
5 April 1786 Isaac baptised privately, received into the church 14 April

Daniel died and was buried on 20 Aug 1784
Interestingly Isaac, who was probably a sickly baby when born so christened privately went on to be a Town Crier

In 1851 their father Peter was lodging with David and Elizabeth Coxhead, and appears to have died in 1854

I shall have a bit of a rest now (and probably a large bar of chocolate) and tomorrow will look for marriages and children of the children if that makes sense

Have a good evening
Bee

Vicky

Just in case you think that the Charles Coxhead I gave you who married Elizabeth Restel might be your Williams brother here are christenings for three of their children at St Laurence

14 Oct 1832 Charles William of West St
13 April 1834 Mary Ann of Oxford St
1 May 1836 William Westall of Friar St

In all instances Charles occupation is shoemaker or cordwainer

I wasn't able to find a christening for Williams father Charles c 1767in St Laurence, although the 1841 census says he was born in Reading. The only other Reading disc I have is for St Giles so I'll have a look on there , and I'll have a look for Martha Bren while I'm at it.

I can't make out Ann Taylor's age either on the 1841, although it looks more to me like 15

Regarding Ann Newbery on the 1841 census the box is ticked to say born in ireland/scotland/foreign parts?? There is also an ann taylor living there with these boxes ticked also, can't tell if she is 15 or 75?

Thank you Marion I have just realised that myself after re reading my threads comments.

Victoria.
You won´t be able to get a cert for Charles /Martha if they were married in 1830.
Civil Registration didn´t start until 1837

Thank you. I may order Charles and Martha's marriage cert if we can't get any further with both of their parents. Just out of interest, had you noticed that both Martha and Charles seemed to have died in the same month, same year?

Beejay

Beejay Report 26 Nov 2010 07:00

That's fine Vicky, ask as many questions as you like, whether I can answer them is a different matter of course.

Yes they were married, the banns were read again in July 1826 and they were married on 25 July, either William came of age or his father consented this time. As far as I can see on just a quick look they didn't HAVE to get married, their first child was born about a year after they married, but I'll have a proper look later on and let you know what I find

Oh my goodness! Thank you so much! You have worked so hard for me and am ever so grateful! This is so exciting finding things out like the marriage being stopped at his fathers request. So does that mean they were never married?? Hate to be asking you questions when you have already been so helpful. Look forward to hearing from you again!

Now for your William

Banns were to be read for his marriage to Ann Newbery in December 1825, but the entry in the parish register reads
"Dec 1825 William Coxhead/Ann Newbery - stopped by the above William Coxhead according to the request of his father, he being a Minor (2 readings, entry deleted)
so he was obviously under age then and didn't have his fathers blessing

I've found him on the 1841, 1851 and 1861 censuses, and on the 1861 he seems to be living with his daughter Rachael in Kingston Surrey. The birth years on each one are different, so in 1841 he was born in 1811, on 1851 in 1808 and 1861 in 1806, so he's obviously not sure when he was actually born.
Hope I haven't confused you too much with all this, tomorrow I'll look for christenings for his children.

By the way, I've found a marriage for a Charles Coxhead but I've no way of knowing whether he's yours

24 Dec 1830 Charles Coxhead to Elizabeth Restel
Witnesses William Murray & Mary Carter

Hope you can make sense of all this

Hi again Victoria

OK, if we're happy that the christening in 1810 is the correct one for your William, here is his parents marriage. All info is again taken from the St Laurence Reading parish registers

17 Oct 1799 Charles Coxhead to Martha Bren
Witnesses George Holmes & Joseph Lay

Christenings for the rest of Charles & Martha's children
23 June 1800 Sarah
14 July 1802 John buried 22 June 1809
6 Jan 1807 James buried 25 April 1807
2 Sept 1812 Bathsheba
10 Aug 1815 Thomas
6 April 1817 Martha
19 May 1819 James
For all the christenings they are living in West Street and Charles is a shoemaker.

I have a burial for Charles Coxhead
1 July 1847 aged 80 living in the Union Poor House, which makes his birth around 1767

I'll have a look for a christening for him and see if I can take youback further with his parents

Victoria

Victoria Report 24 Nov 2010 20:31

Thank you SatNav.
Bee I had never even considered that! Just assumed they were twins (lots of twins in our family!). I will now look for his birth earlier, you have all been really helpful! Thank you!

Beejay Report 24 Nov 2010 07:06

Hi Victoria

The info I gave for the christening and marriage was taken from the St Laurence parish records. As SatNav says, there were no certs before 1837.

Have you considered that as William was christened at the same time as his brother Charles, William may have been older and not a baby as we usually assume.

Don't forget also that ages, particularly on the 1841 census were often rounded down, making him older possibly than the 30 shown

Hi Victoria
Certifcates can only be bought for marriages after June 1837.
You can find the marriage on Familysearch IGI but even if you can trace a copy of the marriage entry there will not normally be fathers names or occupations

Victoria

Victoria Report 23 Nov 2010 18:57

Thanks LadyKira have sent him a message to see if there is a link because I cant see one on his site but you never know! Satnav and beejay. I am looking to order a marriage cert for William and Ann but I cant find their marriage on ancestry even with the dates above???? How did you find that info? Thanks.
