thankyou for your kind reply.i will definitely visit the centrel library .the cawthornes did noy adopt him until around his age of 16 ?which would have been 1930/32 ish .alfred and florence cawthorne were his adopted parents .thankyou for your information xx

You could vist the Central Library in Sheffield to see who lived at that address

ie in 1925
JAMES C HOLMES (FITTER) lived there

Marriages Sep 1915
Holmes James C Raggett Ecclesall B. 9c 729
Raggett Ada M Holmes Ecclesall B. 9c 729

re late adoption, legal adoptions only became law in late 1920's

It is possible that Emily paid for the Cawthorne's to look after him & they kept her up to date with his progress.
Then asked her permission for his adoption because she now had a family of her own.

The above is based on my own family situation. <<<<<<<<<<

So I would start at that address & see if there is a link
BUT she could just have been a lodger but would a family allow a stranger to give birth there ???

SEE WHO LIVED THERE IN 1916 <<<<<<<<<
