Pat, thanks again Mary only married James in 1882 in Edinburgh after his first wife died. She might have come back to Edinburgh after he died in 1895, l couldn'y find her on the 1901 census but she is living in Edinburgh in 1911 with her family. thanks also to Peter and Perse. Hazel

I hope Waikumete is better labelled then some Peter, I have only been there when I have been to a funeral at the place.
We spent ages in Karori trying to find my OH's family. It was a weekend so there was no one we could ask and even with the map it was a real challenge. Here I was going along one bank of graves looking at them all and if I had just looked up and across to the other bank I would have seen it clear as. Could have saved nearly 40 mins.

Hazel re the child born to James and Mary in 1886 with no name on the registry. I checked the death register and the child only lived for 4 hours. You may not want to mention Charlotte's sibling to your mother... but thought I would let you know.

I had wondered re two of my great grandfather's siblings I had the two girls birth registrations in London but could not find marriage or death records. Just a couple of weeks ago I found that their middle name (all the family had the same middle name) had a misspelling and both died in infancy. What one finds out is not always the happiest but does complete the picture.

Thanks very much, this is a great help. Mary came back to Edinburgh after he died . l have details of the family in Scotland. it was the New Zealand era we don't know anything about. This is my mums grandparents, but her mum Charlotte died when she was 9, and she always wanted to know about her mums early life, where they lived , what her life was like etc. Mum is 90 this year and we decided to try and find out with the help of kind people like you . I see they had another child no name registered in 1886. Pat has given you his burial place in Dec.
GRANT, JAMES J M

Plot : WESLEY DIVISION B Row 5, Plot 13

Interment Type: Burial

Title: MR

Surname : GRANT

Given Names: JAMES J M

Age : 49

Gender : Male

Occupation: TEA DEALER

Date Of Death : 09-Apr-1895

Date Of Cremation : N/A

Date Of Burial : 11-Apr-1895

Mary is not in Waikumete.

I take it the family went back home again as there are no further records either marriage or death for the family that I can see at a glance.

Go to NZ BDM site

https://www.bdmonline.dia.govt.nz/

Click on "Search & Order Historical records"

When page comes up, on lefrt hand side click on "search"

When page comes up, click on "deaths" (towards the bottom of page0

When search box comes up put 1895/431 in the bottom box (Registration number) and submit search

The relevant line for James Jack McKinney Grant will appear (don't worry about the spelling - I'm sure it is him)

At the end of the line click on "order product" and then follow the instructions. Order the printout rather than the certificate - it's cheaper and usually has more information.

Let me know how you get on

There is a James Jack McKinney Grant died 1895 - his death cert should give you a lot.
You can get it on line at https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/Home/

The reference no is 1895/431

NZ death certs are far more comprehensive than English ones

There are also two births, with what is obviously him as father

1891/1020 Grant, Charlotte May Bewicke . mother = Mary father =James Jack McKennie
1883/10326 Grant James Irving. mother = Mary father =James Jack McKimmie - so you probably need at least one of these

Get back to me if you need more help
