Hello Mark,

I have been away for Christmas. I hope you had a good one.

No, we don't have any matches. I became intrigued and lent a hand.

Not sure but it would seem that at least two generations of Tennant brothers went to the US, now I just need to find out what happened to the rest of them, thanks for your help, has been a fascinating little progression. Do we have any matches? Mark.

Well done. That's solved that little mystery. I wonder if John died in the US and Louisa was sent back to grandparents.

have found a richard tennant, maybewalton's brother on the 1880 us Census with both him and his wife agnes (and parents) all born in England. The birth year 1815 fits in too. Will look for their marriage. am going off at a tangent too lol but is interesting

Ozibird

Ozibird Report 18 Dec 2010 23:27

Yes, I'm wondering that as I can't find him on any census, or a death.

However I've found Tennants with a Wakefield/Chorlton connection in your family that I'm following, including ones with the name Clementina. I think you can be fairly sure of that baptism that Annette found.

Louisa must have been the daughter of either John, Samuel, James or Richard, the brothers of Walton. Looks like two generations of the family went to or stayed in America. I am presuming Richard c1791 died before 1851 being only on the 1841 census though am starting to wonder if he spent time in the US too....................

Mark

Mark Report 18 Dec 2010 23:04

Fantastic, you are a star! I know Walton spent time in the USA which is probably why he disappears from some census. I got that from an account of Arthur his son from an Illinois publication;

(Was for Ella Tennant's mums obituary - wrongly shows Walton as Walter but could have been a nickname I guess)

Mrs. Weld became the mother of three children: Nellie, who died at the age of fifteen months; Fannie, who lives with her mother; and Ella May, wife of Arthur G. Tennant, who is a clerk in the employ of the Illinois Central Railroad at Clinton. He was born in Lancastershire, England, and is a son of Walter and Eliza (Bradbury) Tennant. His father lived for some years in America, but died in England, and his mother, who is a native of Yorkshire, now makes her home in Chicago. They had nine children, of whom seven are still living. To Arthur G. Tennant and wife have been born two children: William Weld and Fannie Evelyn. They have a fine large residence on the corner of North Jackson avenue and West Johnson street, Clinton, which was erected by Mr. Tennant at a cost of thirty-five hundred dollars, and with them resides Mrs. Weld, who now rents her home in that city. She still owns the farm on one hundred and eight-six acres of highly developed land in Texas township, left to her by Mr. Weld, which she rents. In addition to this she owns one hundred acres near Maroa, which is also rented. These farms are well-improved, there being good two-story residences and new barns upon both.

Sorry, my slip-up. Thought you meant Mary, wife of Richard, went to Chicago.

"I still cannot get concrete evidence that links Richard and Mary as parents of Walton" If you have followed the census for this family, why do you doubt Walton's parentage? You have found his baptism, and his family in 1841.

" I too thought that Mary might have been born in Broughton in Furness" - that is what is recorded for her on the 1861 census when she is living with daughters, Ann & Eliza. Update: also 1871.

Mark

Mark Report 18 Dec 2010 21:09

Hi Ozibird, Walton died around 1886 in Manchester and as far as I can gather, his son Richard went to Chicago in 1887 with Walton's widow Eliza following with other children in 1887/88. I can only confirm Charles Thomas Tennant that stayed as he was my great great grandfather. Some reportedly made money but lost it in the wall st. crash. Walton & Eliza's son Arthur married into the famous Weld family (marrying Ella Mae) and living in De Witt, Clinton, Illinois. I have photos of Eliza and her sons taken at a chicago photographers. I have so much info it is so frustrating not be able to progress beyond Richard and Mary. It looks like Richard, John, Arthur, Walter & william (married De Lora Maclamore from Kentucky) all went to USA with only CT staying in Horwich. Mark.
