Hi there, I've had some amazing help on here pointing me in the right direction loads of times and have managed to save money by getting the right certificate each time thanks to some very lovely people on here.

So I'm hoping that someone might be able to help me with a relative called Emma Emily Chater born 26th November 1870 in Poplar, London.

I think Chater is a French surname and family members have said there was talk of a french ancestry but I'm not sure how far back.

Emily's dad was Edward Chater. Also there was a sister called Annie who was a few years older than Emma, but I've not been able to find any records on Edward or Annie and I can't find any details on the mother.

I did send off for Emily's birth certificate and was told it couldn't be found! Any ideas why this might be?

I do have a standard access to ancestry and can see there was a christening for Emily but can't see the record so was hoping if anyone else can as that would give me a mothers name to help with further searches.

Can anyone help please?

Actually thinking about it, they said the certificate was not available, and didn't say not found. Don't know if this makes any difference though!

That christening for Ann does show a birth date of 26th November, 1870 !!

There is some confusion here?

I ordered the certificate through the yougov site and had no problems with others.

I think Emily's mother died when Emily was young, but this is only from family stories coming down and I don't know how accurate that is.

I got Emily's details from her wedding certificate to James Adams and it gives her father as Edward Chater.

I found an 1881 census record which shows an Anne and Emily Chater living with a Louise Comber in LimeHouse in London. It shows them as scholars so might be the correct one.

I take it you are working backwards from this record?

I have that record but failed to notice that Edward is in hospital!
I think it's put Annie as mother as she was the older sister but only by a few years.

No mention of any older female Chater so it looks like the mother had died or left the family.

Could this be Edward?

It says he is 'unmarried' but he may have been estranged from his wife and called himself unmarried?

EDIT: - Looking at previous census, I am not convinced this is him but he is the only one I can find in Hospital.

This is Annie's birth - the cert would give you parents, presumably both of her and of Emma.

It is a possibility. I need to find and order her birth certificate to confirm but finding a match is not easy. There seem to be variants of the way Chater is slept which doesn't help.

I'm going to have a look again at confirmed details for Edward as I'm sure I've come across general labourer before, but trying to remember where.

It's a massive pain he was in hospital at the 1881 census as could have got a lot more details about him to help locate correct records. Ah well, can't really condone an I'll man!

Thanks Dea, I hadn't found that one.

Yes, It IS addictive !!!

I have been sitting here working on this, and a couple of other queries since 7 am this morning - I REALLY MUST go and do some shopping or we will starve!!

Will be back later though,

Ruth

Ruth Report 8 Jan 2011 13:10

That's ever so nice of you. I've started helping on searches where I can but mainly on another forum. Must go do shopping too!

Will have plenty to start looking at. When my annual ancestry subscription runs out I'm seriously considering going up a level to view christenings and marriage banns as this tends to be which stops me finding the details quite often.

Dea

Dea Report 8 Jan 2011 14:38

You have me puzzled Ruth,

Are you based outside the UK then?

I have only the normal Ancestry UK annual membership but I have access to the London Christenings and Marriages etc. so surely you must have access too?

Dea x

P.S. - How do you know Emma's exact birthdate?

Dea x

patchem

patchem Report 8 Jan 2011 16:39

Dea,
I have normal Ancestry but no access to London Christenings (none of my ancestors ever went near the place) so it did not matter until I started helping on here. If I try to look something up it asks me to upgrade. I assumed my membership was Essentials and Premium was required.

Ruth

Ruth Report 8 Jan 2011 17:24

Hiya, I am in Bedfordshire, UK area. My membership an ancestry is the annual essentials which means I can see lots of records but if I do a search for births or weddindgs I get christenning and banns results but I would have to upgrade to premium to see the results, which it blanks out the names on the search results except for the name of who I am searching for.

Its a bit of a "we have a potential result but you will have to pay more to see it"!

I know Emma's d.o.b as it is on her death certificate.
