Just another thought, have you tried the local parish records to see if they have more information on the marriage record? Also what about local newspapers for an obituary, or write-up about the funeral, they sometimes publish names of those attending. Could provide a possible lead if some of his family attended.

Hi Shirley,

You may be right, have had no luck finding him 1891/1901 with any degree of certainty. Sorry, don't know what else to suggest.

You hadn't given the sisters names, & I haven't tried to find the family on earlier census as you already have them, so I assume this is her sister?

If this is the case, we are probably just looking for plain Thomas Roberts, born c1863 unknown origin, father Thomas, he could be registered on earlier census as an engineer or a fisherman. There are just so many possibilities it would be virtually impossible to find the right one unless he was born locally.

1901 census has a couple of local Thomas Roberts of the right sort of age, single but how do you decide which is him!

Bit of a coincidence, there could be a mis-understanding when registering the death and Thomas Roberts got an extra name?

Were either of Elizabeths sisters married to a Howden? I had already wondered if Thomas Howden Roberts was actually registered as Howden and then took on the extra name of the father.

Shirley_05 Report 9 Jan 2011 15:10

What was the brother-in-laws name? He could be Thomas's brother of her sisters husband.

Shirley_05

Shirley_05 Report 9 Jan 2011 15:05

yes he is, the witness at her death was her brother in law

mac Report 9 Jan 2011 15:04

So we don't know which name is correct, and his occupation has changed from engineer to fisherman within 2 months. I assume they are the same person, is he recorded as her husband on the death certificate?

Shirley_05

Shirley_05 Report 9 Jan 2011 14:59
