So she was posing as Mrs Parrey years before she actually married Benjamin.

Pity the poster didn't think it important to disclose Jane's name in 1881 - would have saved a lot of time.

Hi Mel,

Yes Sydney Herbert was a musician.

I appreciate your help but the searching I am doing is between the years 1838 - 1863. There is no need to research anything past 1864.

Mike,

Am I right in assuming that your comment "pity the poster didn't think....." is referring to myself ?

Jane did, indeed, live with Benjamin Parrey for some years before marrying him in 1886.

I would point out that in my 2nd reply to you I clearly stated that I was only interested in the period 1838 - 1861. Later on in this thread, in anoher reply but not one addressed to yourself, I said my problems lie only with Jane and her father.

But you also assumed Mary Ann was calling herself Jane.

In order to research a person/ unravel a problem, we first have to establish some details to work from.
We can only do this when in full possession of all the facts, as advised by the first post on the board put there by Genes to advise just that.

There are many circumstances where people assume names other than what they were born with. I am wondering if the name James as her father was actually her brother. This has happened before and look at this census for 1851!!!!!!!!

1851 England Census
about Offspring S Moore
Name: Offspring S Moore
Age: 47
Estimated birth year: abt 1804
Relation: Head
Spouse's name: Jane Moore
Gender: M (Male)
Where born: Millbrook, Cornwall, England

Civil Parish: Stoke Damerel
Ecclesiastical parish: St Stephen
County/Island: Devon
Country: England

Street address:

Occupation:

Condition as to marriage:

Disability: View image

Registration district: Stoke Damerel
Sub-registration district: Clowance
ED, institution, or vessel: 1c
Neighbors: View others on page
Household schedule number: 428
Household Members: Name Age
Offspring S Moore 47
Jane Moore 37
Mary Ann Moore 10
James Moore 8
Samuel Moore 6
Jane Moore 2

I think you could probably say that the enumerator got a little muddled. I can find no other ref to an Offspring but notice that the second initial is S for what, Sydney perhaps.........................there is also a brother James and looking further there is a James Moore who is a cordwainer not down as born the same place though. You have to remember that a lot of these people could'nt read or write so would'nt know they had been mistranscribed. The mother is called Jane and there is also a sibling Jane. Whats getting up my nose is I can't find this family on any other census.

Mike,

I am aware of the Genes post on this board. I gave information I had that was relevant to the period of time and the 2 people, James and Jane, that were of concern.

I did not want people wasting their time looking into things I already knew i.e. after 1864 particularly once she was with B Parrey as you cannot get back to her father's origins or establish if she was born Plymouth or Greenwich via her children with Parry. Yet despite re-iterating that I didn't want people wasting their time and effort, that it was pre 1864 I was asking assistance with your little sarcastic comments continued.

Jane calls herself Jane on wedding certificates, when registering the death of her children, on census' etc. yet her son calls her Mary Ann Jane Potesta.

Hi Mel,

Thank you for your reply.

I have come across, many times, mis-spellings, mis-transcriptions (best one yet was Cawana Vira who was Edwina Vera) and family relatives using different names. I have a Great Uncle Tom but it wasn't until I started doing the tree we discovered that he was actually Albert Thomas and Aunty Kate was a Lillian !

I am keeping in mind that Jane may have been Mary Ann but just started to use Jane as she preferred it although this would not have been strictly legal re her wedding certificates but I gues not everyone cared so much back then !!

The 1851 census you have posted is interesting. If James was her brother and her father's name started with an S maybe that is where Sydney comes from, named her first born son (first to survive) after her father instead of her husband.

Defnitely worth taking a closer look at, I obviously overlooked this one.

Thank you.

Yes I have looked at that census a couple of time too. The info was probably given by the householder and perhaps she did'nt know what his occupation was. Trouble is there are a lot of James Moore's born about the same time.
