I would think Sarah Watkiss is your gggrandmother, and William is the next generation up.

1861 census:
Sarah Watkiss
Age 8
Estimated Year of Birth 1853
Relationship to Head of Household Daughter
Occupation Scholar
Address 1, Cannock Road
District Wolverhampton, Wolverhampton Eastern
Parish Wolverhampton
Administrative County Staffordshire
Birth Place Bridgnorth
Birth County Shropshire
Other family (all born Bridgnorth):
William 41 Carpenter
Eleanor 37
Thomas 12

Very possibly they were not married, if she was already married which is what it looks like.

Looking at the 1881 census, I would think it has been mis-recorded for them and also for the father-in-law, his name should be Watkiss.

Haven't been able to find Henry Potter on the census, but nor can I find a death - so she would not have been able to marry Thomas and I can't find a marriage for them. Trouble is with not finding Henry with Sarah on a census we have no idea of his age or origin so it makes it difficult to track him down.

There were a lot of "marriages" which didn't exist, people recorded themselves as married but never were!

Just to get it straight in my head, Sarah poss my GGGrandmother was either watkiss or wathiss before she married Henry Potter. She had two children by Henry a william and Ellenor. She then is married to Thomas Sheppon ( do you think this is a written error as in 1911 sencus of robert and mary they are skippon) .There is no record of their marriage as yet. why do you think we cant find these marriages, do you think she never actually married Thomas?

Can't see a death for Sarah's husband Henry Potter, nor can I find him on census. But that may explain why we can't find a marriage for Thomas to Sarah.

This is pure speculation but:

DALE William Wolverhampton 6b 674
Gobourn Alice Wolverhampton 6b 674
Potter Henry Wolverhampton 6b 674 99%)
Watkiss Sarah Wolverhampton 6b 347

Births Jun 1876 (>99%)

No, his is Thomas Potter on 1891, but William Potter in 1901!

Births Jun 1876 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Potter William Wolverhampton 6b 616

Just checked again, the 1901 census has Robert with step-brother, but this time the stepbrother is called William so the above could be his birth.

I'll check the 1891 again in case I just wrote it down wrong.

Thomas was born Norfolk! Sarah Wolverhampton though, so marriage likely to be there.

Can't see a marriage for the parents Sarah & Thomas - she may have been married before the stepson is Potter, but I can't see him on 1881 census or a birth for him in Wolverhampton.

To sum up, I think the person with the Skippon/langham marriage has gone astray somewhere. Obviously a completely different person.

I would think so, it all fits.
