It's good advice , yes I have my great grandfather's marriage certificate from 1903, with his age given as 18 , and the birthdate of Jul-Aug-Sept 1885 for Manchester ( Vol 8D page 187) is the likeliest accurate date of birth we have for him. We need to get this cerificate I suppose. thanks again.

just looking at those names, from what I have looked at they are 2 different families, but I could be wrong. The only way you are going to find out Joe is to get that birth certificate for James. Without reading thu the 3 threads again I think you said he was your (gt?) grandfather whose age and father you have presumably previously confirmed from his marriage certificate

please feel free to delete my other threads if they are getting in the way, I don't want to clog your system up and you're right it saves information being repeated.

I thought it was a tree for my great-great grandad Willaim Henry Morris and that because the chidlren were right, it meant all the other details like spouse and parents were also right . :-(

Shirley that's fascinating stuff, in a way I'm relieved as human errror means we've always a chance of being right was well as wrong.
Many of my ancestors in the old ceriticates signed a cross as their mark because they couldn't write, so it makes sense they might not have been the greatest counters in the world, especially as at that time their parents and grandparents were too busy surviving and bringing up handfuls of kids, to always remember dates accurately. My Mum even gets my name wrong sometimes and mixes me up with my brothers.

So, my best bet so far is Charlotte morris aged 50 in Prestwich. in 1909.

Prison? Oh my god. My Mum will be mortified.

The age on a death cert is only as good as the informants knowledge.
Had i registered my mums death I would have been a year out cos she always said she was born a different year to protect nans name who was pregnant when she married !! Luckily it was my elder sister who did the arrangements and I only knew the truth when I queried her age on the coffin plaque.

Any declaration only says you sign to say the info is true as far as you know!

In the days when people couldnt read or write the ages were all over the place as they couldnt count either !!

I do not know how old you are, but my children do not know where I was born, because they are not particularly interested. My sons frequently forget my birthday(date and year). I was convinced for years of my Mother's birth year, but was 1 year out (not the same year as the Queen, but a year older). Birth certificates get misplaced. So, if you are asked for details you might be correct, but you could easily be wrong.
