Julie. Have a look at this site:

http://www.abertillery.net/oldabertillery/memories.html

Someone by the name of Hemmens talks about his grandfather working at the bakery in Hill St although he doesn't give dates. Scroll down the page to find his post.

There is a forum on the site so you could try asking there.

Good luck

well it was 1930 so I doubt they will still be there. You would have to have an Electoral Roll search to get any more names or find the local paper and put a letter in

Julie

Julie Report 5 Feb 2011 17:43

thankyou for all your help, Would you know how or if I can trace the owners listed as rogers at the bakery in abertillery that you found in the phone book? kind regards Julie

RutlandBelle

RutlandBelle Report 5 Feb 2011 16:41

Julie you can't access Electoral Rolls on line. Historic ones are kept at the nearest large library. They are only searchable by address

You would have to google for that and then contact the local Studies officer.

Some will do for free if it takes less than half hour, some charge, as you have a street address shouldn't be too difficult

good luck

Thankyou, that is interesting about the bakery at abertillery, would you know how I could trace who lived there at that time? I wonder if it was Laura's parents or brother who had the bakers shop? and my aunt nan were just told it was her grandma and grandad? I also have found out that my grandma Ethel came out of the abergavenny hospital in 1956 until 1959 as a voluntary patient and lived in chepstow during that time on Howells Row. do you know if or where I can access electoral records for those years in that area on line? she went back into the hospital in 1959. kind regards Julie

Julie what an awful story about your grandmother.

Just out of interest I looked on the Ancestry Phone books for 1930 and though I coudn't find anything in Newport there is a Rogers Bakery at Hill St, in Abertillery which is north of Newport

Julie I don't think that the marriage in London is connected to you, the full cert is on Ancestry on the London Records

I dont think the death entry for 1954 tie's in with her age!

Julie

Julie Report 5 Feb 2011 15:26

Thank you for all your help, it does make sense that Ethel was born illegitimate, but my aunt who is 88 says up to the age of about 10 she used to visit a bakers in Newport and called the owners her grandma and grandad! Sadly my father passed away suddenly following a fall just before Christmas aged 81, and I know from him that his mum Ethel went into the Abergavenny hospital in 1934 with what we now know as Post natal depression, the awful thing about this is that my dads father told the kids that she had died in 1934 when in fact she had not. (this was around the time my aunt was told she would not be visiting her grandparents again at the bakery) My father received a letter late 1980 to say his mother Ethel had died at the hospital aged 81 and you can imagine the shock! sorry to be going on but the mystery now of who the people were in the bakery in Newport is intriguing to say the least, I guess if I could find a marriage that may help, the one from Kath shows a Laura marrying someone from London and not Wales but I guess that could be possible, or if I can locate Laura;s death then the certificate may have some information. All your help is much appreciated. Kind regards Julie

Julie, i doubt very much that William Rogers (With the same surname!) is the father of Ethel. The name was more than likely added to the birth certificate to save embarressment.

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 5 Feb 2011 15:13

If the birth in Herefordshire is correct then this could be a possible marriage:-

Name: Laura A Rogers
Year of Registration: 1912
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
Spouse's: Charles C. Ward
District: Fulham
County: Greater London, London, Middlesex
Volume: 1a
Page: 576

and POSSIBLE death:-

Name: Laura A Ward
Death Registration Month/Year: 1954
Age at death (estimated): 74
Registration district: Edmonton
Inferred County: Middlesex
Volume: 5e

RutlandBelle Report 5 Feb 2011 15:08

Julie I think you may have to accept that the name of William Rogers as her father was made up to 'save face'.

Women gave birth in the Workhouse because it was a safe place for unsupported women, they were not necessarily in as Inmates. My gt grandmother gave birth to her first child in the Workhouse when she was unmarried.

You could try to find Laura's death, I had a quick look but unfortunately it is a fairly commom name

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 5 Feb 2011 15:08

Possible for Laura's birth (she says birthplace is Herefordshire on one of the census):-

Name: Laura Ann Rogers
Year of Registration: 1871
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
District: Hereford
County: Herefordshire, Hereford and Worcester, Monmouthshire
Volume: 6a
Page: 502

It is also possible that Ethel "made up" a father's name when she married as there was a stigma to illegitimacy in those days and lots of illegitimate children invented a father to save face with the new in-laws.
