not really

One always has to look for all possible spellings

............. you cannot guarantee spelling of anyone's names on those old documents, even the censuses. And sometimes not even on official documents.

Remember that most of our ancestors were illiterate. Many census enumerators were only slightly more literate.

If someone made a mistake in spelling (eg, putting Macdonald instead of Mcdonald), then the ancestor may not have been able to spell sufficiently well to ask for a correction.

that is why we never ever rule out any alternate spellings just on the basis of the spelling.

On my grandmother's birth certificate, her name is spelt Alice McDonald. The surname is spelt the same for both her parents. Does this help with the search or not?!

Hi Marion and Ozi

I've been looking but no luck :((

Ozibird

Ozibird Report 24 Feb 2011 21:29

These are most likely.

Births Mar 1858
McDonald Ann Shoreditch 1c 119

Births Dec 1859
MCDONALD Robert Shoreditch 1c 1_3

MarionfromScotland

MarionfromScotland Report 24 Feb 2011 21:21

Right so we are looking for Robert and Ann age?

Ozibird

Ozibird Report 24 Feb 2011 21:12

The problem at the moment is finding young Robert & Ann in 1861.

Ozi

Ozibird

Ozibird Report 24 Feb 2011 21:01

Well, I think we can be sure of this,

Births Jun 1861
MCDONALD James Rowe Shoreditch 1c 129

and that he married Amy Moore in Bethnal Green in 1882.

Also this is a fairly good chance:
Marriages Jun 1857
McDonald Robert Clerkenwell 1b 717
Rowe Ann Clerkenwell 1b 717

MarionfromScotland

MarionfromScotland Report 24 Feb 2011 20:51

Not sure what we are looking for now lol

Ozibird

Ozibird Report 24 Feb 2011 20:39

Not sure as there is no Ann or Robert jnrs in 1861, but they may have been staying with relatives.

Ozi

We on the right track ladies?

Marion

Ozibird

Ozibird Report 24 Feb 2011 20:10

In the 1871 that MarionfromScotland found, Robert was a Gold Wire Drawer. Not a common occupation. Also born in Bethnal Green.

Spelling wasn't so formal as it is today.

Dear Ozibird
I think the details from 1861 census could be from another McDonald! What do you think. The spelling of McDonald is Macdonald - but that could be elementary!
All very interesting trying to fit the jigsaw!
Thanks again
