You seem right Pamela.

And the death I found is just another Robert and Bessie as her maiden name appears to be Hunter,,dau of William and Elizabeth.

What was Bessies fathers job and that of Robert McFadyen?

Kay,

I am sure that the 1901 census with Bessie MacFadyson at 177 Crossloan Rd Govan is the right one as Helen (Ellen) who is the one we are descended from was born at 177 Crossloan Rd Govan 13 May 1900.

Pamela,

Robert and Bessie McFadyen are on the 1901 Scotland Ancestry census.....at 13 Sword St district of Dennistoun.same area as the death of Bessie.

Have you the right Bessie and parents ?

Hi Kay,

She has to be in there somewhere, but where is the question.
Her parents were both Irish, but I really couldn't imagine that she would leave her young family to go to Ireland, could you?
I did try a search with just McFadyen & Rodgers combination which brought up one, not in or around Glasgow, but she turned out to be the wife of Rodgers with maiden name McFadyen.

Hi Pamela,

The father given by Robert the widower on death doesnt match the one you have though,so probally isnt yours ,

the other 2 McFadyen Elizabeth that died between 1909 and 1916 were far too old by alot of years, this Bessie her age was given as 39.

Thank you Kay,
But if Bessie had been married before, would that reflect in her husband's name?
I have not had any hint of a previous marriage for her to date. She was just 19 when she married Robert McFadyen, not that that precludes a previous marriage.

Hi Pamela.
There is only 1 Bessie McFadyen/Fadyan between 1909 --1916.
Glasgow.- 18th May1909..

she was the wife of--Robert Ross McFadyen.

Could Bessie have been married before?

its not unusual for names to be added in on Scotlands records.

Catherine,
Did you get a reply from me? I sent one this morning (Aust time) but it is not showing here.
Anyway, the answer is: Robert Hendry McFadyen shows on most census as McFadyen, but on the 1901 census Bessie is there with 3 young children but the transcription has them as MacFadyson.
Robert is missing from this census.

Is the surname on the census McFadyen?

Thank you Kay,
I will give it a try. The trouble is that sometimes she was Bess & others Elizabeth.
I just wish these people would stick to their true given name - it would make things a lot easier!!

Hi Pamela,

If you are already using Scotlandspeople, itt will allow just a first name search now in Stat Registers.

Try just for Bessie deaths 1909----1916 as all counties see what results it brings up.....--it could be you have entered too much known information.

alternate you could try just the surname and above dates,,she maybe down as Elizabeth?

It could be Mcfadyan>?

I am hoping that there is a kind-hearted person out there who can help me find the death of Bessie Rodgers who was born 11 June 1875 at 11 Queen St Govan the daughter of Jeremiah Rodgers & Elizabeth Bulla.
She married Robert Hendry McFadyen 29 March 1895 at Govan.
On the 1901 census she was living at 177 Crossloan Rd Govan with 3 young children (Thomas born abt 1897 Govan, Elizabeth Jane born 1898 Govan & Helen 1900 also Govan). Her husband was missing from this census - presumably away working.
Bessie's last known child (Robert Hendry McFadyen) was born 1 Jan 1909 (still Govan) and when her daughter Elizabeth married in 1916 she is listed as deceased.
I have looked & looked at the Scotland's People site with no success. Perhaps there is a spelling variation that I am unaware of here!
I would be most grateful for any help.
