Hi all, this is now a new search for my grandparents inheriting land in Sydney in 1924. They travelled from England to Sydney on the ss Balranald leaving in March 1924. They returned to England arriving back on 14 July 1924. They were therefore only in Australia for around four weeks. It has been told to me that they inherited some land and that was the reason they were out there. Granddad was Edward Gerrard Rabette and Grandma Marie Helene Rabette nee Day. Whilst in Sydney they stayed at 31 King Street, Randwick, Sydney, NSW. So far as I know there were no relatives living in Australia. Wondering if anyone has any thoughts on how I could find out what they actually inherited ie is there something in a local newspaper or a record anywhere?

Kind regards

Kathryn

Kathryn, it may be an idea to edit the title of this thread to reflect you're now interested in locating property in Australia. (Go to your first post and click edit).

Hi All, just to let you know I now have copy of Mum's birth certificate. Yes, she was born at sea on the ss Beltana, port of registry, Greenock. Thank you all for your help it is much appreciated. I now have the task of trying to find out, if possible, what land granddad and grandma inherited. A place of abode for them is given on the birth cert as 31 King Street, Randwick, Sydney, NSW. We now know they were only there for a matter of weeks, maybe about four. So far as I know there were no relatives in Australia so this is the next mystery?

Kind regards

Hi, I believe the inheritence was on my grandfather's side so the Rabettes. I have found an address that was given for them whilst they were in Australia 31 King Street, Randwick, Sydney, NSW. I found this on a piece of paper whilst searching for something else. Sorry I haven't been online over the past few days but have been in London.

Kind regards

Hi Gwyn

I quite agree, especially with it being her first child too.........I certainly wouldn't have wanted to. :-)))

The other thing I noticed was that the home address for them was different coming back to that going out.

Mary
I think that sounds a very reasonable deduction of the situation.
How strange that someone should even think about undertaking such a long journey, when heavily pregnant.

Gwyn

This is confusing isn't it? The dates don't stack up somehow - well not to me anyway LOL.

If they left on the 11th March and arrived back in UK 14th July that's just over 4 months, (18 weeks). The journey out is 7 weeks & 5 days, the return journey would be about the same, even rounded down that would be 15 weeks minimum. So that just leaves 3 weeks at the most for the child to be born and included on the ships manifest?

My understanding is that there are always 2 lists of passengers. The list compiled at the time of booking (hence why sometimes names are crossed through because they didn't actually embark) - and the 2nd list taken just before arrival at the port which is kept by the immigration people.

So if my understanding is correct, the lists shown on FMP are the outgoing lists (we never get to see the 2nd list because it's retained by the destination country).........and the lists shown on Ancestry are the 2nd list which are retained by the British immigration officials.

I could of course be completely wrong and stand to be corrected LOL.

I tried to look on a few pages on the ship's register. Births at sea are recorded at the end of the list, but didn't see one for the correct ship.

I don't know how these things work, but is the list not compiled from names of people who set sail, rather than landed? Any changes en route are usually noted?

Just out of interest, I looked at the length of journey time for the outbound journey (which was 54 days, so nearly 8 weeks).

So assuming that the return journey took the same length of time, if your mother was 1 month old at the time of the ship docking in London, then she would have to have been born while at sea.........so her story of being born on the ship near the Cape of Africa sounds about right to me.

The births at sea register isn't online for that time period, you would need to go/contact Kew for that.

Grandparents on which side? The Day's or the Rabette's?

Hi all, apparently my grandparents inherited some land or property in Australia hence them being there. I was adopted at birth so am trying to piece my family's life together. I do know a lot but it's my mother's birth etc I am intrigued with and the surrounding events. This is all very bizarre as you say, I should imagine in those days it took a long time to travel by ship to Australia. All your views and ideas are much appreciated. Any help adds to the jigsaw.

Am going food shopping in about half an hour (boring) but I will certainly check for any replies before I go and also when I get back.

Kind regards

The wind might have been blowing in the right direction.... bearing in mind it'll have to have gotten to Sydney!

I too would guess that she was born in Australia.
One would imagine that they waited to travel from Sydney just a few weeks after her birth. We can only guess where they lived, but a Sydney area birth look-up would be my first choice.

This is all very very bizarre....

Why would a clerk travel to Australia with a pregnant wife in March and return in July??

I wonder if they planned to have the child in Aus? Did they get there and not like it?

It's very strange, what work did your Grandfather do?

You will also need to contact the BMD people over there for your mothers possible birth, they have a 100 yr restriction which means we cannot gain the birth data for another 13 yrs online :(
