Gwyn in Kent

Gwyn in Kent Report 2 Mar 2011 21:26

If they married just after the war, it is possible that Jozef had been sent to England and possibly was in the Polish Army.
We were able to obtain Army records of such a person and a most welcome photo.

The marriage certificate is key to your further research.
Searching back in Poland needs a birth area, but hopefully the doctors will be able to tell you more about that.

PPS...I work with Polish Doctors so I will ask them about family history from there. Maybe they'll know, maybe the won't, but it'll be worth an ask!

hi talanya,
the name olchowski is deffinately a polish name.
around about the date given, poland were going through a transition period, where they were under the rule of austria/hungary , russia , and germany (prussia) , so the info cath gave is more than likely correct. the poles had i believe 3 uprisings , against their rulers, eventually winning
their country back. its possible josef escaped from the austro /hungary part of poland, and escaped to canada, via the baltic sea. although it would have been a very hard journey to get to the baltic, from where the austro/hungarians ruled, and then made his way to england from there. personally i would look for his birth in poland,
but there are not many polish sites on here, but its still worth googling.
regards alan

I don't know anything other than what I've put here I'm afraid. I was just intrigued by the name.

I've got to go to work now unfortunately but I will check the site tonight when I get home.

Thanks for the help and advice.

Do you know if he is still living?
If not, his death cert. could also give you a clue to his date of birth.

Thanks Catherine. Will do.

If you don't have the marriage cert. then I think the first thing to do is to buy a copy. It will give you his age so you can work out his date of birth, and it will also give you his father's name and occupation which may also help find him.

There are lots of other Josef's with similar surnames in the passenger lists on ancestry but without a date of birth it's impossible to say if any of them could be him.

Catherine I don't have a marriage certificate to cross reference I'm afraid. If this is the same Josef he will have married Mary at age 64-ish. Not impossible though!

Thank you for your help. I'll keep this information..just in case!! You never know!

Best regards.

When was he born? His age should be on his marriage cert.

There is this one arriving in England in 1912??

Name: Jozef Olchowski
Birth Date: abt 1885
Age: 27
Port of Departure: St John, New Brunswick, Canada
Arrival Date: 13 Apr 1912
Port of Arrival: Liverpool, England
Ports of Voyage: Halifax
Ship Name: Empress of Britain
Search Ship Database: View the 'Empress of Britain' in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database
Shipping line: Canadian Pacific Line
Official Number: 120940

...........says he is a citizen of Austria, so even if this is not him then it could be a clue to his place of birth!

The information I have already about Josef:

Married Mary Duff in 1949 in Willesden.
Had a daughter in 1950.

Would somebody be kind enough to locate Josefs birth for me please as I don't think it was in this country.

Many thanks.

PS Thanks to brummie Jan again!
