If it is about the same family it is best to put it here Michael. That way people wishing to help can get the background.

Pleased that you have a successful outcome to this query.

Good luck with your research.

Michael

Michael Report 3 Mar 2011 13:21

You are right, deffinately Eliza Smith, born in sudbourne 1832.

All of the above is correct.

Brilliant, well done.

If I have a new query is best to put it here or start a new thread?

Thanks again everybody. :)

I think that you are correct Mary, even with the surnames Smith and Jackson it seems too much of a co-incidence! The fact that Eliza named her sons Jonathan and Jerimiah certainly looks promising.

There is this Bury marriage??

The Eliza Smith i posted about wasn't in the workhouse in Sudbury.

She was with her parents and siblings in 1841 /51 in Bury area.

I think Eliza jackson was born Sudbourne rather than Sudbury therefore the info i have posted would seem to be correct.3 census returns say Sudbourne.

Did you notice Eliza Smith's dad Jonathan and brother Jeremiah same names as 2 of her sons!!

A lot of coincidences don't you think.

No Mary just from various records, 1828-31 is the range.

Michael Report 28 Feb 2011 17:14

Looks like Eliza Smith was born/lived in Sudbury Union Workhouse.

There could be numerous reasons she was there so tracing her would be difficult I would think.

I doubt I will get any more information on her, if the Birth Certs come back and Smith is her name it will be a shame.

I have just been reading up on work houses and they aint places for young children.
I hope she was happy.

Have you it in writing that James was born 1830?

1881 his birth 1827
1891 1827
1901 1827.

I know you can't realy trust the ages on census returns but they do seem consistant.

Michael Report 28 Feb 2011 16:33

James was born 1830

I have purchased certificate for Jesse Jackson for fingers crossed it is on there, hopefully I can also get certificate for James.

I was under the impression that the birth records on here is a replica of the actual thing, I now understand this is not the case.

Thank you

James Jackson married 17/10/1852 St Mary Bury to Eliza Smith.

Maryb.

Mary

Mary Report 28 Feb 2011 15:54

A tree says Eliza Smith married James and it could be right.

1851 North Bury Lancs D 1d >61
Jonathan Smith carpenter born 1782 suffolk
Martha 1782 Suffolk
Eliza 1832 Sudbourne.
Jeremiah 1834 Sudbourne.
so we need marriage prior th the birth of Jesse 1854/5.

The Smiths were also in Lancs on 1841 census.

It also says parents for James born 4/9/1826 died @ 1911 are John and Nancy Jackson.

There seems (on Freebmd) to be several James Jacksons that married an Eliza in the likely time scale in Manchester. The only way to be sure that you have the correct Eliza is to buy a birth certificate for one of her children.

Flick

Flick Report 28 Feb 2011 15:37

It doesn't take too much imagination to work out that Richard Mills could be Eliza's son prior to her marriage................

Flick

Flick Report 28 Feb 2011 15:35

Yes, it's right...no spouse name unitl after 1911.

Just look for the marriage using the KNOWN info...............

rootgatherer Report 28 Feb 2011 15:35

So have you actually purchased / seen Jeremiah's birth certificate?

Flick Report 28 Feb 2011 15:34

If the MMN isn't recorded, you haven't got the CERTS - you've only looked at the index

MMN isn't on the GRO index until after 1911, although Lancsbmd have transcribed some MMN info. NOT, however, in the case of the Jacksons - I have checked
