It might be worth contacting the Grasmere Nursing Home to ask if they can share details of his relatives that they may have in his records. Patient confidentiality shouldn't be an issue in relation to a deceased person.

Elizabeth

Elizabeth Report 28 Feb 2011 17:17

Hi my father is William (Bill) above. He passed away 19/09/2010 - in Grasmere Nursing home, Worthing, West Sussex.

I am in Australia and have only had very sporadic contact (via phone and email) with him over the years - since I tracked him down in 1997. I don't know much family history - except for his parents names.

I am desperately wanting to get in touch with a cousin - I believe her name is Catherine, although I'm not 100%.

Bill had a sister, and her daughter, his niece would be my cousin. I anticipate she would be aprox 50-60 now. I don't believe she had any children.

She is the only living relative I know of on my father's side.

My mother worked for and had a relationship with my father (Bill was an Osteopath and Medical herbalist - registered with the National Institute of Medical herbalists) while on a working holiday in the UK during 1977. (There was a large age gap)

His name isn't on my birth certificate, as she wanted to spare him of being chased for child support.

They wrote until I was 7 - and his new partner was jealous of Mum sending photos and voice tapes to him, and they lost contact. I tracked him down when I was 19, and we emailed and spoke on the phone occasionally... but he never agreed to do DNA testing to prove I was his and have his name put on my birth certificate... I just wanted to feel connected to that part of my family...

I rang him for his birthday on 05/02/11 (yes he would have been 95) only to find that he had passed away in September.

Kay Burton, the executor of his will, and cleaning lady for over 20 years, had promised to let me know when he passed, but she didn't. She claims she wrote to me in December, but it never arrived.

I have spoken with her, and she refuses to help me with family history or to put me in touch with his next of kin - his niece - Catherine I think her name is. She states he wasn't close with her.

I have seen his flat up for sale online (5 Ariel Court, Brighton Rd, Sompting Lancing BN15 8RQ) - and I wonder if she thinks I am looking for an inheritance... Kay has been unnecessarily aggressive and thus I am a bit stuck... Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! :-)

His parents name - Alfred Henry William Long and Mary Davis. His father was a Motor Cab Proprietor (according to his birth cert)

I believe he married once or poss twice before my mother came along, but I don't know of any other living children. I believe he had a son that was either still born or passed away as a baby.

From what he said I don't think his niece has children either.

He was cremated and his service was on 27/09/10 at Worthing Crematorium. The obituary says he was dealt with through Dunford Funeral Service.

Given I don't know Catherine's surname or really any other details, how would I go about tracking her down?

I believe she has no idea I exist, but I would like to rectify that, as I want to know more about my roots and find out if I have any living relatives on his side.

Please feel free to ask questions or provide suggestions.
Thanks heaps.
I am in Australia and ought to be sleeping, so if I take a while to get back to you I do apologise.

Thanks
Liz
