I have found a fourth cousin once removed!! who says it was Williiam but have yet to discover the details. How do you find the details of families before 1841, when your ancester was newly married and move on? A clue seems to be the Haberdashers Company. Do the old livery companies keep records and how would you access those? Ros.

Hello there,
Thank you all very much. I could not read the May christian name on the marriage certificate either!!! Polly/Tolby & Chesnae/chemae/chernae (which is likely to be a followdown family name). Richard.1804 at St.Martin in the Fields sounds too posh. There were lots of Mays and some Bawtrees around that area at the right time but they were all poor; some in the workhouse and one in jail. I am inclined to think it was William and Elizabeth, rather than Richard and Rosanna. I don't know why ,except that name has turned up more often, but I can not find any proof. Off the top of my head , I think William ended up in the Robert Ask's Hospital; and an Amelia Bawtree was in the work house. Maria Ann Bawtree must have been Maria's mother or perhaps a cousin. In the latter case she could have had a daughter of her own born in 1819 called Maria. My g.g.grandmother Maria was born in c.1810. What do I do next? Ros.

Richard May 1805 was my g.g.grandfather. He and Maria his wife were both born in the City of London, then in Middlesex county. He was a cheese monger and they lived at 145 Kingsland Road, Shoreditch, Tower Hamlets in 1841 & 1851. They had four children - Richard Bawtree May dob.10 July 1837, Elizabeth Maria 1840, Priscilla 1844 and Maria 1847, all born in Shoreditch. Can anyone go further back than 1805 and tell me where my May family line came from? Many thanks. Rosalind May.
