Hi all just looked up the marriage record for matthew and elizabeth and they are both down as being widows

thats what i would have thought as well as it fits dont it. My nan has told me as well that she thought both his parents died when alfred wa.s quite young. so not sure any more, this line has been the most difficult to trace in my family.

Well, you did the hard bit finding that surname.
Quite a satisfying one this, don't you think? Good bit of teamwork!
Just shows how important certs can be though, without that there was no chance of sorting this out.
