Not long to wait for the Scottish 1911 census - two weeks on Tuesday not that I'm counting the days you know! Already booked in to the SP Centre.

I am still digging around and can now confirm that John Brown Calder was deceased before 1919. His daughter Elizabeth was married that year and her Marriage certificate shows him as deceased. I am presuming also that he was deceased prior to 1916/17 as his son was killed in action in France and every piece of paper I have in regard to that is only addressed to his wife, Sarah. So other than waiting for the 1911 Scottish census to be released I am completely stuck!

Let us know how you get on with that. Roll on 5th April when the 1911 Scottish census will be released!

Never thought of that one rootgatherer! I'll check and see if there are any matches for him in Scotland. Cheers!

I wonder if John had moved to Scotland before the 1901 census and his family then followed him. It may be that he died in Scotland but his death was registered without using his middle name.

Hi rootgatherer

I contacted Helen and Sarah was definitely a widow when she died.

Thank you rootgatherer, I will give that a go!

Have you gone onto Scotlandspeople and looked at the death for Sarah that Helen posted? The death certificate will tell you if Sarah is "married to" or "widow of" John.

I have checked the death register from Jan 1896 to Dec 1901 and he is not there. He is not on the 1901 or 1911 census. I just don't know where to go from here!

Thanks to everyone for the help with Sarah but I am still struggling with her husband John Brown Calder b1869. Sarah is on the 1901 census with her 2 children, Elizabeth and John (jnr) but her husband is not there. Sometime between 1901 and 1911 Sarah moved to Scotland, they are not on the 1911 census. I am trying to find the date of death for John (snr) but can't find any trace of him anywhere. I have even tried military deaths as I thought he might have been involved in the Boer War 1899-1902, but nothing there either.
I would be most grateful if anyone could help in any way, or at least point me in the right direction.
Many thanks.

John Brown Calder b1969
I still haven't found any information on his death. He doesn't appear on the 1901 English census and his son was born 1896. So I thought maybe the Boer War but still cant locate a death date.

Does anyone have any suggestions please?

Apologies to everyone!! I thought I should start a new thread as this was a different person, obviously I know now I was incorrect!

Apologies Flick but I was not aware that Sarah had moved to Scotland, I only knew that her grandchildren were born there, Margaret and John, until I saw the address for Sarah regarding her sons death, and realised it was in Scotland.

You should have said at the start that they moved to Scotland.....you had the info from the son's death.

Ann

Thanks very much Helen, that info is excellent.

Thanks to everyone for all your help....very much appreciated.

Ann

Ann Report 10 Mar 2011 12:39

Thanks LindaB for that info.

It looks like she may have died in Scotland, perhaps Kirkaldy??
As the info on her son only has her name on it I wonder if her husband died prior to moving there?

As they don't seem to be on the 1911 census, I can only presume that they moved to Scotland prior to that, with or without John (snr).

Well, you have two options then. Firstly the Scottish 1911 census is out next month. Secondly you can search for death on Scotland's People site (pay per view).
