Maryb, this may be a silly question but what's Ancestry tree? People in this community have been able to discover things I couldn't find out through the records available via Genesreunited!

I live in York so I'm not too far away from Haworth. It's been years since I last went there and until a few days ago I didn't know that any of my relatives were from Haworth. It's fascinating to think that my ancestors were living there at the same time as the Bronte family!

Yes thats right Haworth is a district in Keighley registration,also people born in keighley in 1800s were classed as being born in Bingley.

Morton is about 4/5 minutes away from keighley and 15 mins from Haworth (Bronte Country).

I was up at Haworth yesterday.

Ann Redman's parents were according to Ancestry tree Peter Redman 1812 Wadsworth died Haworth and Alice 1818 Wadsworth.

1911 Ada Hainsworth 2,Church Street Bingley and at 6,Church St Sarah Ann Sunderalnd wife of Havilah?

1911 Miranda Sunderland with son and his wife at 222,Thornton Road Bradford.

Maryb, I didn't know Ann's maiden name but the date sounds about right. Their first child Havilah was born in 1856. Mary and her two oldest children were born in Haworth, which I believe is (or was) in the registration district of Keighley.

Yes, according to the marriage certificate Ada's father was John Sunderland. I've never heard of James and John being interchangable! In any case, I think it's fairly clear from the census evidence that Ada was in fact the daughter of James and Ann Sunderland.

Julie,did you mean Ada's dad was John Hainsworth or Sunderland on the marriage certificate of George and Ada?
I think sometimes James/ John and Jack were interchanged

Helen, I forgot to add that HARLAK was a failed attempt on the enumerator's part at HAVILAH!

I've searched the 1871 and 1881 census returns and found a John Sunderland with a daughter named Ada, but she was only 6 in 1881. My Ada's DoB would be c.1866 according to her marriage certificate or c.1869 as indicated by other census returns. There are a few other Ada Sunderlands of about the right age but none of them have a father named John!

I wonder if the person who wrote marriage certificate, having already put down "John Hainsworth" as the groom's father, got distracted and put down the same Christian name for the bride's father?

I now have a copy of George and Ada's marriage certificate. The wedding took place on 7/5/1887, and as I expected George's father is given as John Hainsworth, machine fitter. Unfortunately the certificate has thrown up another mystery: I was under the assumption that Ada was the daughter of James Sunderland, but on the certificate his name is given as JOHN Hainsworth (deceased), warp dresser. Yet one of the witnesses was Miranda Sunderland, who I thought had the same parents as Ada - James and Ann!
