Christopher, the birth year might be wrong on the death entry - this is quite a common problem. Alternatively, she might have been born somewhere else.
You have no option but to get Gertrude's marriage cert.

The best advice is to buy the marriage certificate. Flick has given you the details. Order it from www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

Once you have this, if your grandfather came from Ireland you can then search for him in the Ireland 1911 census which is free at::
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/

With a bit of luck Gertrude's marriage certificate will confirm that that is the correct 1911 census posted.

Christopher you say that Gertrude had a sister Frances and one called May. This looks like the marriage for the couple on the 1911 census.

Marriages Dec 1902
Convey Mary Ann Manchester 8d 407
Pugh John Thomas Manchester 8d 407

And a birth for Gertrude's sister May?

Births Jun 1913
Pugh Mary E Convey Manchester 8d 399

You get her father's name from her marriage certificate, and for that you have to buy it.

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

Then you look for them together in the 1911 census, look for her parents' marriage, look for her birth, etc. The marriage certificate might also have a brother or sister as a witness. Do you know whether she had siblings and who they were?

As Flick has said, it's not unusual for birthdates on death records for very old people to be wrong. My grandfather thought he knew he was Edward born 1900 in West Ham. When he retired and got his birth certificate, it turned out he was Edmund born 1901 in West Ham.

But the only way to trace your Gertrude is to get her father's name from her marriage certificate.

I think people are still waiting to know what it is that says James wasn't born in Ireland or however that went.

Christopher says sisters Frances and May didn't marry.

This death would match the Frances in the 1911 census posted:

Name: Frances Pugh
Birth Date: 22 Jul 1906
Death Registration Month/Year: 1978
Registration district: Manchester
Inferred County: Greater Manchester
Volume: 38
Page: 1366

Are you saying that her age is 28 on her marriage certificate ?

She may have got it wrong / lied.

Age on death certificate is only as good as the informant knows ... or thinks they know.

If she was born Mancester then she was registered in 1904
If she was born 1900 then she wasn't born in Manchester.

Check her birth cert for correct parents to be sure.

Looks like she had her 80th birthday a little early !!!.
