Find Ancestors

Hi everyone,
I have come across an article of the 73 Regt soldiers from UK who stayed in Australia at their own request. There is a Daniel and John McEwan and a John Miller plus a James , Michael and 3 Thomas Millers. Do you think this is possibly the missing piece of the jigsaw, where John McEwan met up with John Miller and they formed close ties?

Marriage notice found in local paper, dated 9 January, 1860

On the 31st ult., at the residence of the bride's father, by the Rev P. Smyth, Robert Clarke only son of John Miller Esq, of Worksop, Nottinghamshire, England to Amelia eldest daughter of Mr John McEwan, and grand daughter of the late Lieutenant and Adjutant McEwan of Her Majesty's 1st Royals.

The above was found in the 1859 Victoria Statistics, The Colony of Victoria, for the year 1858. Presented to both houses of Parliament by His Excellency's command. (Victoria Gazette)

Elizabeth Miller died Dec 1872 Worksop [7b 21] age 84. 1871 census states she is living on the income of houses and land when she was living at 14 Bridge Place, Worksop, Notts.

You guys and dolls never cease to amaze me. Whilst I have been away working you have still been compiling stuff. Your appetites are ravenous for information. Once your on the trail, like a dog with a bone, you don't let go. Ref your last Lindsey. Elizabeth Hogg [from the 1st marriage] born 1829 Worksop who assumed the Miller name is possibly the one whose age seems a bit off? I owe you all beers for this huge amount of info you have given me, so if you ever get to England let me know. I am going to do an overlander next year from UK to Oz on the tour bus so I hope then to visit the places the Millers and McEwens lived at. Thank you all again.

It did seem to me that "under £2000" was not a lot of money, even for 1867 .... so you could be correct in thinking there might be something to find in Australia.

Ah, but Sylvia, you visit Nova Scotia! Me, I'm just here in boring Central Canada ... watching "Rake", Tony! (Mick in the Bush recommended it in my thread on Chat and we've watched the first episode and have just downloaded 5 more ... although wishing we had closed captioning on our television to get subtitles for some of it!)

I wonder whether Robert Clarke Miller might have had property in Australia still that called for probate there too. (There was a case of that on the boards here recently, where the will of someone who died in England was probated in Australia for that reason.)

My bet for the deaths of Robert and Amelia might be tuberculosis (phthisis in the old jargon). It took several in a single family in my tree. The death certificates would say.

The extra additions of John Clarke Millers Probate and the other things you have informed me off is an abundance of information I never thought I would get, having stumbled on getting no where. The help from Lesley and TonyOz is also invaluable. I will try Tony again later over the Victoria web site as having had a quick look I see it costs to join. I did have a free 24 hour look for these people on GR.au but to no avail. I think I must also try to find out about Amelia McEwen and her ancestry. Tremendous, I bow to your superior knowledge! I will obtain a copy to see who was bequeathed what. As he died after his wife it should all hopefully be John Clarke Miller and any brothers and sisters he had. Once again thank you for all you help and assistance. To say I owe you one is an understatement. If I ever get to my cousins in Wilmot, Nova Scotia one day I will let you know, and buy you a beer. Ta very muchly.
